Heed this notice! The ensuing information discloses spoilers about the Star Trek: Strange New Worlds episode titled “Shuttle To Kenfori.” You can watch it via a Paramount+ membership, but proceed with caution as you may inadvertently uncover secrets!
Following two exhilarating opening episodes, the third outing of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds appears to have wrapped up one of the most contentious storylines from Season 2. Titled “Under The Cloak Of War”, this episode revolved around a Klingon war criminal pardoned by Dak’Rah and given an ambassador role within the Federation, which was hailed as one of the darkest episodes in the franchise. In the final moments, the ambassador perished during a confrontation with M’Benga, leaving viewers uncertain about the true events. However, thanks to “Shuttle to Kenfori” and actor Babs Olusanmokun, we now have some clarity on the matter.
In “Shuttle To Kenfori,” the character revealed the facts, however, it’s likely this confession was extracted under pressure. Previously, I had attempted to extract information from the director regarding this episode, and even developed my own theories due to unavailability of the actor portraying M’Benga. When I finally spoke with him, you can be certain I seized the opportunity. Is the confession reliable? Here’s what Olusanmokun shared with me:
The character told the truth in “Shuttle To Kenfori,” but it seems like this truth was forced out of them. Earlier, I had tried to get information from the director about this episode and came up with my own theories because the actor who plays M’Benga wasn’t available. But when I finally spoke with him, I made sure to ask questions. Is the confession trustworthy? This is what Olusanmokun told me:
Yes.
It’s clear that the showrunners and writers hold ultimate authority over the storylines, but if Babs Olusanmokun believes his character genuinely confessed to Bytha, Dak’Rah’s daughter, then I am satisfied with that portrayal. For those who may need a reminder about the conversation, let us re-examine it.
What M’Benga Told Dak’Rah’s Daughter
In the midst of my relentless struggle against the undead horde alongside Captain Pike, I found myself cornered by none other than Bytha, the vengeful daughter of ‘The Butcher of J’Gal’. Infuriated by my role in her father’s demise, she challenged me to a duel, insisting it was necessary to redeem her bloodline after his cowardly assassination in M’Benga’s eyes. However, when I declined her offer, Bytha seized control, taking Pike hostage and threatening the Captain with the cold edge of a knife. It wasn’t until that very moment, pinned against a wall by fear and duty, that I uttered these words:
I took Rah’s life. I had the chance to spare him, but a notorious killer presented an opening for me to act, and I chose to do so voluntarily. If given the chance, I would make that choice again. Therefore, his death is a reality I accept. Was my action dishonorable? I cannot say with certainty. However, I believe there was a sense of justice served. I deceived to safeguard the evil within me, should it ever be required again in the future.
This version aims to maintain the original meaning while making it more accessible and easy to read for a general audience.
In the confession, Bytha found the reason to free Pike and issue a deadly challenge to M’Benga. It appeared as though the doctor might have been saying what she wished was true to shield her Captain, making it seem like a convenient narrative. Now that this suspenseful question has been answered, I find myself more at ease with the series concluding in Season 5.
Is The Door Shut On M’Benga’s Klingon Drama?
It appears that with Pike promising not to report his coworker for their words during that particular incident, it seems like Starfleet will take no further disciplinary action concerning Dak’Rah’s demise. However, if a trial were to be held by the Federation, Pike would find himself in quite a predicament, as he would have overheard a direct confession from him.

Could we possibly see more scenes involving ‘Moretegas’ in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3, as suggested by actress Melissa Navia’s comments on fan desires for her character?
In summary, “Shuttle To Kenfori” feels like an episode tailored to wrap up the storyline from Season 2, much like how the Season 3 premiere handled La’an’s Gorn-related trauma. It seems unlikely that this plot will resurface in future episodes, especially since Babs Olusanmokun has confirmed his character was truthful in his account. At this point, I can’t see any remaining mysteries to be uncovered.
I express my hope that Seasons 3, 4, and 5 will feature more episodes featuring M’Benga, portrayed by Olusanmokun, who is a major star of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. Every storyline involving him always includes an unexpected turn, be it wild or heart-wrenching, that I can’t get enough of. While I am satisfied with how the current story unfolded, I am eager to know what other fans think about it.
