Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will be phased-out with a fifth season.
Paramount+ confirmed that our favorite series will return for a fifth season, featuring just six episodes. However, this upcoming season will mark the end of the show’s run.
Right from the start, Strange New Worlds aimed to uphold the core values that Star Trek has consistently embodied – an insatiable thirst for knowledge, optimism, and faith in a brighter tomorrow. As executive producers Akiva Goldsman, Henry Alonso Myers, and Alex Kurtzman expressed, we are profoundly grateful to Paramount+ for allowing us to realize our vision of a five-season journey, exactly as planned, alongside our exceptional cast and crew. To the passionate fans who’ve embarked on this voyage with us – THANK YOU! The journey is far from over, as there are still three more thrilling seasons waiting for you.
Indeed, the news arrives before the third season debut of the show on July 17, Thursday. This means that viewers will have a new season this summer and another one ahead – the fourth season – before the abbreviated fifth and final run (seasons 3 and 4, along with previous ones, consist of 10 episodes each). Production for season four is currently underway, while production for season five will start later this year. As of now, no premiere dates have been set for the remaining seasons, but it’s likely that “Strange New Worlds” won’t end until around 2027 or 2028.
Given that the series serves as a precursor to “The Original Series,” fans have been eagerly anticipating Captain Pike (Anson Mount) and his crew to eventually align with the classic show’s timeline. It appears this convergence might happen in season five, considering the creative team has been informed about when the project will wrap up. As Goldsman told Collider, “If given the freedom – essentially, if Paramount allows it – we will continue into the era of ‘The Original Series.’ We know how to do it. That’s the plan.
As a gamer, I’m keeping an eye on the gaming world as Paramount Global is tightening their belt. They announced back in August that they’re slashing their U.S. workforce by 15% due to the challenging economic climate within our industry.
Following the commencement of a heavily serialized “Star Trek” era with shows like “Star Trek: Discovery” (2017) and “Star Trek: Picard” (2020), the production team, headed by Kurtzman, opted to revert back to the traditional, exploration-focused narrative style of the 1966 original series with “Strange New Worlds”. This shift has resulted in Paramount+’s most-watched “Trek” TV series and even earned a nomination for Best Drama at the Critics Choice Awards in 2023.
The Final Frontier.
Paramount+ is developing another series titled “Star Trek: Starfleet Academy.” This upcoming show, overseen by Noga Landau as the showrunner, focuses on a fresh group of cadets preparing to become Starfleet officers. The leading role is played by Holly Hunter, who portrays a Starfleet captain at the Academy. Filming for “Starfleet Academy” was completed in February and it’s anticipated to premiere either towards the end of this year or early 2026. According to Kurtzman, speaking to the L.A. Times, the series is “incredibly optimistic,” “extremely enjoyable,” and “very funny” with a strong emotional component. He believes that these characters will symbolize the feelings of many young people today in diverse ways.
In the third season of “Strange New Worlds,” Mount is accompanied on the bridge by Rebecca Romijn, Ethan Peck, Jess Bush, Christina Chong, Celia Rose Gooding, Melissa Navia, Babs Olusanmokun and Martin Quinn. This season’s guest stars include Rhys Darby, Patton Oswalt, Cillian O’Sullivan, Melanie Scrofano and Carol Kane, who reappears as the peculiar Lanthanite, Pelia. Additionally, Paul Wesley makes a comeback as Captain James T. Kirk.
The third season continues directly from the suspenseful ending of the previous one, as the crew aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise encounters the aggressive alien species called the Gorn. Paramount+ hints at a fresh antagonist and guarantees “exciting journeys that explore themes such as faith, obligation, love, humor, and mystery, combining genres not previously explored in any other Star Trek series.
