Star Trek’s Garrett Wang Shared His Initial Reaction To Voyager’s ‘Deadlock,’ And What He Really Thinks Happened To Prime Harry Kim

As a long-time Star Trek enthusiast who has witnessed the highs and lows of various series, I must say that Harry Kim’s journey through Voyager has been a unique and memorable one – even if it did get a bit surreal at times. The “Deadlock” episode was certainly bizarre, but hearing Garrett Wang‘s take on it makes me appreciate the character all the more.

Occasionally, the show Star Trek, particularly for Harry Kim, can take an unusual turn. The character experienced some unfair treatment on Voyager, such as in the notorious episode where he was permanently replaced by a duplicate after being killed off. I had the opportunity to discuss this peculiar episode, “Deadlock,” with actor Garrett Wang and gain insights into his real thoughts about its execution.

In getting ready for the upcoming “Trek” series airing in 2025, I recently got to chat with Wang about his role as Harry Kim on “Lower Decks” and some of his past experiences working on “Voyager”. We discussed various topics such as when the character from the Prime Timeline’s Harry Kim was sucked out of a hull breach and perished, only to be replaced by another version from a ship of doubles. Here is how Garrett Wang reflected on this event:

As a movie enthusiast, when the scene unfolded before me, my mind raced, ‘Did something unusual just occur?’ However, upon closer inspection and rational analysis, it became apparent that this new character was an identical replica of Prime Harry. There was no discernible difference at all. So, I’ve decided to take it in stride. I’m not going to dwell on it or question it too much.

As a dedicated Star Trek: Voyager enthusiast, I must admit that the lack of Harry Kim’s promotion didn’t irk me as much. After all, the characters share similar origins and backgrounds, making it less of a challenge for the newcomer to adapt to this fresh universe. Hearing Garrett Wang’s perspective on the matter helps me accept the change more easily, keeping my fandom of Voyager intact.

Based on current knowledge, it appears that Harry Kim has perished. However, given the unusual nature of events in Starfleet, death isn’t always final. Garrett Wang, who played the role, has proposed a theory suggesting that Main Kim somehow survived being ejected into space and has an idea for reintroducing the character to the Star Trek universe.

In my imagined scenario, the main character Harry (Prime version), who’s pulled into space, unexpectedly finds himself aboard a hovering Borg sphere, which had been lurking nearby. Upon noticing Voyager ejecting its youngest crew members out of an airlock, the Borg decide to beam Harry on board instead. Over time, this leads to Borg Kim being utilized as a secret weapon by the Borg Queen in an attempt to reclaim Seven of Nine. This was my proposed idea for a potential future storyline.

I totally agree with Wang’s unconventional thought; it’s not every day a great idea like this comes along. If the long-awaited “Star Trek: Legacy” ever materializes, I’d be thrilled if they made Prime Borg Kim the primary antagonist that Captain Seven of Nine encounters in the series. This would not only make for an incredible narrative, but it would also provide us another chance to witness Wang as Kim!

Currently, we’re treated to an abundance of Harry Kim in the “Fissure Quest” episode of Star Trek: Lower Decks. This installment has stirred quite a ripple due to its introduction of multiple Harries from different universes, even one who received a promotion. If you haven’t caught it yet, I strongly recommend you activate that Paramount+ subscription without delay, particularly if you’re a fan of Voyager.

Don’t miss out on streaming “Star Trek: Lower Decks” and “Voyager” over on Paramount+, your one-stop destination for all things Star Trek! As 2025 draws near, I can hardly wait to witness seasons 3 of “Section 31” and “Strange New Worlds,” and I’m keeping my fingers crossed for some exciting announcements about the future of Star Trek in the upcoming years.
