As a long-time Trekkie who has been following Star Trek since its humble beginnings, I find myself once again caught up in the whirlwind of speculation surrounding the potential return of the beloved crew from The Next Generation. LeVar Burton‘s recent comments on Star Trek: Legacy have rekindled my hope that this spinoff may still be within reach.
After the finale of “Star Trek: Picard” Season 3, there were numerous demands for a sequel that some fans referred to as “Star Trek: Legacy“. Showrunner Terry Matalas acknowledged Paramount’s awareness of these requests, but our upcoming rundown of “Trek” shows doesn’t include it. Although discussions about the spinoff have quieted down recently, LeVar Burton’s recent remarks could reignite the conversation as fiercely as before.
Burton didn’t hesitate when TVLine questioned him about Patrick Stewart’s comments at New York Comic Con a few years back, where he expressed the idea that the stories of The Next Generation crew were not yet concluded. When asked for his own thoughts on this matter, Burton shared his interpretation of what Stewart might have meant:
It appears that his feelings about Legacy are still sincere, both back then and now. For our production team, the crew, and the viewers who’ve been following for the past two years, it seems like the concept of Legacy remains just as captivating as it was during Picard’s initial airing.
I was absolutely certain that Star Trek: Legacy was in the works and would be released eventually. I had such faith in it that I believed it was being kept under wraps. However, as time passed without any news about a sequel, some people started to lose hope. Then, when Terry Matalas became showrunner for Marvel’s Vision series, those hopes seemed even more distant.
In my opinion, the popular “Vision” series might boost the chances of “Star Trek: Legacy” coming to fruition. This is because if Matalas finishes working on this project, there will likely be increased interest in his work, which could lead to a higher demand for him. LeVar Burton, who has been around the business for quite some time and understands the Hollywood scene, hinted that given the success of “Starfleet Academy,” it seems logical for them to consider “Legacy” as a potential next step. However, he emphasized that he’s not certain about the future plans for “Star Trek.
I don’t have a direct connection with their inner circle, but it appears they are fully committed to Starfleet Academy. In today’s climate of cost-cutting and withdrawal in the entertainment industry, it seems they plan to concentrate on this project until they feel confident enough to consider something else. If given the chance and resources, I suspect they would eagerly pursue this venture, as it aligns so well with their vision.
I concur with LeVar Burton’s viewpoint that the new Star Trek series seems to be heavily invested in the Starfleet Academy. This is demonstrated by the addition of Oscar-winning actress Holly Hunter and renowned actor Paul Giamatti. Moreover, they have also recruited several actors from Discovery and even included Robert Picardo from Voyager. In my opinion, this suggests that a significant amount of effort is being poured into this show, possibly explaining why other shows were terminated before it.
As a passionate gamer, I wholeheartedly concur with the notion that if Star Trek is focusing on grand productions featuring renowned actors and established franchises, opting for the Legacy spinoff seems like an excellent decision. However, LeVar Burton and others can merely lobby for Paramount to reconsider and revive the series; ultimately, it’s up to them to make the call. Fingers crossed that they seize the chance if there’s still demand for the show when Alex Kurtzman and others are ready to join the project!
As a dedicated Star Trek: Lower Decks fan, I’m thrilled to hop on this journey with the Cerritos crew for their final season! Every Thursday, I eagerly tune in, knowing that each new episode brings us closer to an exciting conclusion. I can hardly wait to see how it all unfolds!
