Star Wars villain Darth Maul is getting his own series.
The iconic character who debuted in the 1999 film “Star Wars: The Phantom Menace”, is set to star in an upcoming animated series titled “Maul: Shadow Lord“, which will be exclusively available on Disney+. This news was revealed at the Star Wars Celebration event that took place on Friday.
The series unveiled during the last moments of a panel commemorating Lucasfilm Animation’s 20th anniversary, featuring Lucasfilm Chief Creative Officer Dave Filoni and Animation Vice President Athene Portillo, who have both ascended in their roles within the animation division. They shared insights about collaborating with George Lucas, delved into the animation process, and reminisced about past successes. However, when it came to discussing a forthcoming project, they opted for a demonstrative approach rather than explanation. Instead of elaboration, they unexpectedly screened a trailer for the audience.
When people realized the series focused on Maul, fans burst with overwhelming excitement.
2026 marks my eager anticipation for the premiere of a new show that delves into the tale of Maul mentoring an apprentice. It’s thrilling to know that Sam Witwer, who brought Maul to life so brilliantly in past animated series, will once again step into the role.
In his portrayal as Maul, it’s clear that this character possesses an impressive and enduring impact. His striking appearance, complete with a dual-bladed lightsaber, left a lasting impression on viewers when introduced in Phantom Menace. Ray Park brought the Sith Lord to life with impressive acrobatics, and he demonstrated genuine lethality by taking out Jedi Qui-Gon, played by Liam Neeson. However, his life was ultimately cut short when young Obi-Wan Kenobi severed him in two.
However, it proved impossible to permanently eliminate such an intriguing antagonist as Maul, and he made a comeback – this time in a cybernetic form – in the animated series “Star Wars: The Clone Wars.” Not only was Maul reintroduced with this show, but also later in “Star Wars Rebels,” where his character was fleshed out even further, revealing an intricate past filled with criminal underworld dealings and captivating storylines.
During a discussion commemorating the 20th anniversary of Lucasfilm’s animation department, it was announced that Maul will have his own series. This division played a significant role in maintaining the Star Wars lore during economically challenging periods in the 2000s and early 2010s.
The group examined the initial stages of the animation department, with Filoni discussing his tight collaboration with George Lucas, a staunch supporter of animation who played a significant role in the creation and refinement of techniques such as previz. Together, they unveiled an exclusive, previously unreleased clip, depicting a sequence (originally intended for the Clone Wars series) where Anakin Skywalker pursued Boba Fett across Coruscant’s skies and streets in previz form, which unfortunately didn’t make it to the final cut. They also previewed an upcoming episode from the new animated series titled Star Wars: Tales of the Underworld.
