In the first episode of Andor, a crucial scene is based on authentic events that unfolded in World War II.

Approximately twenty minutes into the opening episode, Director Orson Krennic (Ben Mendelsohn) convenes a clandestine meeting on a snow-covered mountain base. Here, he strategizes with key Imperial officials about seizing and possibly annihilating the serene textile-producing world of Ghorman. This pivotal scene sets the stage for crucial events leading to the construction of the Death Star, as depicted in the Disney+ series.

Krennic tells them bluntly, ‘There’s no documentation, no proof – none of you were present at this meeting. If your colleagues or superiors aren’t here, they’re not privy to the project. This group in this room is a secretive one.’

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the creator of ‘Andor’, Tony Gilroy, reveals that one scene is reminiscent of the infamous Wannsee Conference in 1942, where 15 high-ranking Nazi officials secretly planned the systematic extermination of millions of Jews over a formal gathering. He explains that the initial conversation between Krennic regarding Ghorman closely mirrors the discussions at the Wannsee Convention – a dark gathering where the Nazis strategized their ‘final solution’.

In appearance, the meeting spot seems utterly distinct from the Berlin suburb palace that hosted the Wannsee conference. However, its snow-covered peak bears a striking resemblance to a fusion of two notable landmarks of the Third Reich: Adolf Hitler’s well-known hilltop retreat, The Eagle’s Nest in the Bavarian Alps, where crucial decisions were often made (and was prominently displayed in HBO’s Band of Brothers). Additionally, it shares a similarity with Hohenwerfen Castle in Austria, another Nazi-controlled snowy mountain fortress during the war.

In Star Wars, it’s clear that the Galactic Empire drew significant influence from Nazi Germany and other authoritarian regimes, as evidenced by several similarities. For instance, their armed forces, known as stormtroopers in the Empire, share a name with the Nazi paramilitary group, Sturmabteilung. Darth Vader’s helmet bears resemblance to helmets worn by Wehrmacht officers. Additionally, much like Palpatine transitioning from chancellor to emperor, Hitler rose from being Germany’s chancellor to becoming a dictator. Lastly, George Lucas initially based the space battle scenes in ‘A New Hope’ on World War II dogfight footage.

The highly praised Star Wars drama series on Disney+, titled “Andor“, chronicles the thrilling escapades of Rebel Alliance leader Cassian Andor, played by Diego Luna. This narrative leads us to the events depicted in the movie “Rogue One“. In a span of four weeks, the 12-episode second season will be unveiled in three segments, each containing four episodes.
