I must confess, as a long-time Star Wars enthusiast with countless hours spent traversing galaxies far, far away, I was initially skeptical when I heard about “Star Wars: Skeleton Crew.” However, after binge-watching this delightful new Disney+ series, I have to say that it has become one of my favorite additions to the Star Wars universe.
The Star Wars franchise, bursting at the seams with numerous characters, may seem to have reached its limit given the multiple films and shows since 1977. However, the recently released Disney+ series, titled “Star Wars: Skeleton Crew“, demonstrates that there’s still room for more. This fresh take on Star Wars introduces characters who aren’t part of the Skywalker saga or the Rebel Alliance. The story unfolds in an ordinary suburban town on a planet called At Attin. Instead of focusing on the epic struggle between the Jedi and the Sith, “Skeleton Crew” zeroes in on a group of seemingly harmless kids who end up lost in space. During the era of the New Republic, this series narrates an entirely original tale featuring new characters that seamlessly blend into the broader Star Wars universe.
Drawing influence from the success of series like “Stranger Things” and the 1985 film “The Goonies“, “Skeleton Crew” focuses on a quartet of youngsters: Wim (Ravi Cabot-Conyers), Neel (Robert Timothy Smith), Fern (Ryan Kiera Armstrong), and KB (Kyriana Kratter). When Wim stumbles upon what he thinks is an ancient Jedi Temple, he persuades Neel to join him in investigating his find. However, as Fern and KB bypass their plans, they all end up inside a ship that’s been left abandoned instead.
Following an unintended space voyage beyond their planet’s boundary due to auto-pilot, the children stumble upon the ship’s robot, SM-33 (portrayed by Nick Frost), who appears to be unfamiliar with their planet despite previously landing there. The series, brimming with rapid humor and thrilling escapades, marks the initial live-action attempt to base its storyline around children and cater specifically to a younger demographic. Suitable for viewers of all ages, its characters significantly enrich the Star Wars universe, although one stands out as particularly exceptional.

Among the myriad captivating characters, such as SM-33, the witty ship’s droid, Fara (Kerry Condon), Fern’s mother and At Attin’s undersecretary, Wendle (Tunde Adebimpe), Wim’s single father, and Jod Na Nawood (Jude Law), a charismatic Force-sensitive pirate, it is the children in this series who truly shine. These young characters have an exceptional chemistry that makes it challenging to single out one as a stellar new franchise addition. The kids’ lively interactions and escapades create a unique, age-appropriate storyline without patronizing the younger viewers, while still offering plenty of engaging content for adults.
Wim often acts on impulse rather than carefully considering his actions, Neel, Wim’s friend, brings humor to their group. Fern is rebellious and sometimes overly clever, while KB, Fern’s friend, serves as the group’s intellectual critic. Each member adds a unique spark that makes Skeleton Crew reminiscent of The Goonies. However, when it comes to standing out in a crowd, KB is undeniably the most impressive new character in the Star Wars universe. Although all members have their merits, KB’s calm composure and other qualities set her apart as the top pick.
Why Is KB the Best Addition to the ‘Star Wars’ Franchise?
Unlike other members in the group, KB remains somewhat enigmatic to viewers. So far, we haven’t gotten a peek at her home or been introduced to her loved ones. In contrast, the first episode introduced us to Wim’s disciplined and hardworking father, Neel’s large and affectionate family, and Fern’s influential and respected mother, offering glimpses into their respective personalities.
Contrary to the other characters, KB stands out uniquely because there’s no one similar for viewers to compare her with. This sets her apart from them right away. To add, she sports a cybernetic visor linked to an implant on her head. In numerous aspects, she differs significantly from her peers. Initially appearing insignificant, it doesn’t take long before KB showcases her skills and qualities.
KB stands out as a unique, thoughtful, and composed young individual who effortlessly exudes kindness and coolness without striving for it. She seems to have an uncanny ability to understand people and adapt to the ever-changing dynamics within their group. Unlike her peers, she isn’t preoccupied with making an impression on others and maintains a remarkable level of calm among the four children so far. In contrast to her friend Fern, KB carefully considers each challenge before taking action, demonstrating thoughtfulness rather than acting impulsively.
In numerous aspects, KB maintains order among the group by just being herself. This is particularly true when it comes to Fern, who tends to act boldly. Yet, it’s important to note that KB’s actions are not insignificant. Her composed demeanor offers the group the means to weigh their decisions thoughtfully, even if they don’t always follow her advice. While they may stray, KB’s presence and astute suggestions provide them with the chance to make informed choices. Without KB, the group would be in a more disoriented state than they currently are.
