As a seasoned gamer and Star Wars enthusiast with memories of playing the original trilogy on my family’s NES, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgic excitement upon hearing about the latest addition to the Star Wars universe – Skeleton Crew. The prospect of Jude Law teaming up with four lost children in search of their home planet is intriguing and reminiscent of the classic adventure stories that initially drew me into this galaxy far, far away.

The upcoming “Star Wars” series titled “Skeleton Crew” will debut on Disney+ this holiday season, seeming to carry on a recent trend within the “Star Wars” universe. Created by Jon Watts, director of “Spider-Man: Homecoming”, and Dave Filoni, “Skeleton Crew” is part of an expanding series of interconnected “Star Wars” tales that encompass “The Mandalorian”, “The Book of Boba Fett”, and “Ahsoka”. In this installment, Jude Law takes the leading role as Force user Jod Na Nawood, working alongside four children who are wandering the galaxy in search of their home.

Following the controversial incident involving review-bombing on Rotten Tomatoes for the film “The Acolyte”, there’s growing curiosity as to whether the upcoming release “Skeleton Crew” might face a similar backlash. We are getting nearer to finding out.

Star Wars Loves a Cute Alien

In November 2019, when The Mandalorian premiered on Disney+, viewers quickly grew fond of a cute alien character later known as Grogu. Given his resemblance to a younger Yoda, he was affectionately dubbed “Baby Yoda” and became a fan favorite. Due to the character being kept under wraps before the series’ premiere, there were no merchandise featuring him for the 2019 holiday season. However, this changed drastically by the next year, as Grogu became one of the most sought-after items for the holiday season, available in various forms such as plush toys, high-end collectibles, and branded apparel. Today, Grogu is among the most recognizable Star Wars characters, even earning a spot in The Mandalorian & Grogu title, which will bring Star Wars back to theaters in May 2026.

Cute aliens being used to sell merchandise is certainly nothing new for Star Wars. Fans were very critical of George Lucas when he introduced the Ewoks in Return of the Jedi, as they saw them as teddy bears that served no purpose but to appeal to children who wanted to own their own minature version. Since then, there have been several similar characters gracing the franchise, such as BB-8, Grogu, and one of the more recent cute cuddly aliens, Nub, from the Disney Junior series Young Jedi Adventures. While not much is known about Neel, being the child-like version of a popular Star Wars alien species will likely earn him a big following.
