Star Wars: What The Mandalorian’s IG-11 Looks Like In Real Life

Star Wars: What The Mandalorian's IG-11 Looks Like In Real Life

As a die-hard Star Wars fan who has grown up watching and re-watching the saga multiple times, I must say that Taika Waititi’s contribution to The Mandalorian was nothing short of extraordinary! Having followed his career since the quirky, humorous “What We Do in the Shadows,” I was thrilled to see him bring his unique style to a galaxy far, far away.

In putting together a team for “The Mandalorian” Season 1, Lucasfilm enlisted a skilled group of directors to create the first live-action Star Wars TV series. This collective included Taika Waititi, who directed the Season 1 finale, “Chapter 8: Redemption,” and also lent his voice to IG-11, the droid bounty hunter character that Kuiil (Nick Nolte) reprograms to serve as a caretaker. In “Redemption,” IG-11 selflessly gave up his life so Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal), Grogu, and their allies could flee the Empire. Waititi resumed voicing the character in Season 3, when IG-11 was eventually rebuilt and ascended to the rank of Marshal of Nevarro.

Taika Waititi is primarily recognized for his work behind the camera, notably contributing to the Marvel Cinematic Universe with movies like “Thor: Ragnarok” and the upcoming “Thor: Love and Thunder.” He also received an Oscar for best adapted screenplay for the film “Jojo Rabbit” in 2019. Apart from his directorial works, which include titles such as “What We Do in the Shadows,” “Hunt for the Wilderpeople,” and “Next Goal Wins,” Waititi has amassed more than 50 acting credits. He often appears in his own productions (for instance, playing Korg in the Thor films and Adolf Hitler in “Jojo Rabbit”), but also features in projects such as “Green Lantern,” “Free Guy,” “Lightyear,” among others. Despite his extensive filmmaking career, Waititi has found time for various roles, and an invitation to work in a distant galaxy was too enticing to resist.

Taika Waititi loved working on The Mandalorian

Taika Waititi, renowned for his distinctive approach and wit, found success in various projects. His humor was a signature element when he took on “Thor: Ragnarok,” breathing new life into the character after the somber “Thor: The Dark World.” Before the launch of “The Mandalorian,” fans pondered how Waititi would mesh with the Star Wars universe, given that directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller were let go from “Solo: A Star Wars Story” due to creative differences stemming from their comedic background. However, during TCA 2019 (as reported by /Film), Waititi revealed that Lucasfilm has a tighter rein on tone compared to Marvel, but he was eager to comply.

The director enthusiastically shared that working within the Star Wars universe was an unforgettable experience, as it fulfilled the childhood dream of encountering stormtroopers. He added that interacting with dozens of them was truly awe-inspiring. In his own words, he adored this unique opportunity. Moreover, he acknowledged and appreciated Jon Favreau’s talent for creating immersive worlds. Despite adjusting his style for the Star Wars project, traces of his distinctive humor can be detected in “Redemption.” The episode kicks off with a comical scene involving two scout troopers and Grogu, brilliantly merging Waititi’s comedic flair with this legendary franchise.
