Stargate SG-1 Creator Elegantly Explains Why That “Universe” Can Never Truly End

As a lifelong fan of the Stargate universe, I can’t help but feel like I’ve embarked on an intergalactic odyssey that spans across decades and galaxies. From the initial thrill of the 1994 film to the captivating tales spun in both SG-1 and Atlantis, I’ve journeyed alongside these characters, exploring distant worlds and unraveling cosmic mysteries.

As a gaming enthusiast immersed in a captivating sci-fi universe, I find myself propelled into orbit, breaking free from the constraints of any singular film or show. Its allure transcends generations, making it a cosmic escape that captivates and connects us all.

Indeed, it was there where the sprawling Stargate saga had evolved into Stargate Atlantis – a popular spinoff series following Stargate SG-1 – which concluded its five-season journey in 2009. With strong viewership and just prior to the debut of another spinoff, Stargate Universe, Atlantis left an open ending for possible TV movies, but alas, those never materialized.

I’ve had the pleasure of collaborating with Jonathan Glassner, who later became a co-creator of The Ark, just as we did with Stargate SG-1. Similarly, Brad Wright teamed up with Robert C. Cooper to co-create Stargate Atlantis, and together they eventually created Stargate Universe. You can catch the SYFY hit series Stargate SG-1 here!

As Wright elegantly explained at the time of SGA’s cancelation, the larger world of Stargate (including, of course, Atlantis) had expanded in scope fully enough to be able to tell stories not just in Pegasus or even on Earth — but in any galaxy where one of the Ancients’ space-leaping portals might open.

Wright expressed on GateWorld that he felt a Stargate storyline shouldn’t truly conclude. “If the Stargate program were real,” he explained, “I don’t believe it would ever end; instead, it should continue to advance, always moving forward to remain as optimistic and progressive as I believe Stargate to be.

The mythical city of Atlantis ceased its existence despite maintaining strong viewership ratings, paving the way for a planned movie called Stargate Extinction. Regrettably, this film never came to fruition. However, the captivating universe of Stargate persisted, starting from the late 2009 debut of Stargate Universe and culminating in the 2018 premiere of the web-based series Stargate Origins.

Wright drew a comparison between the diverse sci-fi potential of ‘Stargate’ and that of the ‘Star Trek’ franchise. He pointed out that Gene Roddenberry’s classic 1960s series established a universe where numerous films, TV shows, and spin-offs could continuously emerge – and most importantly, captivate fans. Just as ‘Star Trek: The Original Series’ gave birth to an endless stream of new ‘Star Trek’ tales, the ‘Stargate’ realm, initially introduced by Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin in the 1994 ‘Stargate’ movie, has also grown into a life of its own.

Wright remarked, “It’s a venue for spinning tales,” he pointed out, explaining how Stargate SG-1 even moved story arcs to establish a new chapter in its lore during its 10-season journey. “As we developed a more extensive mythology to pull from and introduced some changes to the show, allowing characters to develop and change, it could move forward, expand, and fans would stick with it.
