Steam User Turns Trading Card Profits to Purchase Steam Deck — And It Actually Worked

Someone recently managed to manipulate the Steam Trading Card market to successfully purchase a Steam Deck, leaving many people astonished.

On February 3, the Twitter user @Ringler_SSBM, or The Sovereign Netizen, posted this message: “I aim to acquire a Steam Deck solely by trading cards.

His intention is to gather as many trading cards from his Steam friends as he can, regardless of their worth or quantity, so long as there’s something he can trade. The objective here is to accumulate a total of 52,000 trading cards, which equates to the price of a Steam Deck: $399 for the 256GB LCD model, $549 for the 512GB OLED, and $649 for the 1TB OLED.

Ringler_SSBM meticulously chronicled his progress, recording each milestone on his path to a specific target. Every new development gave him a jolt. After that point, he consistently expanded his Steam Wallet through the Steam Trading Card Market alone.

For newcomers, Steam Trading Cards are part of Valve’s gaming platform where players can receive small monetary rewards from the games they play. They get these cards at random each time they play a game. These cards can either be used to create badges that boost a player’s Steam Level or traded and sold for actual money.

As an avid collector, I’ve noticed that the average Steam Trading Card sells for a mere penny or two. However, the rare gems, particularly those from upcoming titles such as Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, can fetch quite a pretty sum, anywhere from $4 to $8 apiece!

Initially, @Ringler_SSBM had a modest $57 in his Steam account. Following a brief rest, he awoke to discover his balance had mysteriously doubled. This small surge was enough to ignite his fascination with the excitement of watching the figures climb. In no time, both friends and strangers started contributing game cards to his project, with an astounding 16,000 items accumulating in his inventory. He playfully suggested that someone at Valve might be growing anxious as he gradually disrupts this specific market economy.

Currently, he has accumulated $650, which is sufficient to purchase the priciest Steam Deck model with an OLED screen. In all, he’s sold more than 22,000 trading cards, and at this pace, he’ll surpass the console’s price within a few hours. Any excess money will be given to hospitalized gamers who can’t afford a Steam Deck. Truly selfless.

If you’ve kept tabs on his adventures through X, it’s been quite an exhilarating experience. Some might even say it’s insane, but gamers are often willing to go to great lengths for the adrenaline rush. His goal was simply to get a Steam Deck, and now he has managed to achieve that!
