As a long-time fan who reminisces about the golden days of Suits on USA Network, I can’t help but get excited when I hear about new projects involving my favorite cast members. Having watched Stephen Amell‘s evolution from the Arrowverse to Suits L.A., and now to Underbelly, it feels like I’ve grown with him, much like a Canadian maple tree in the 1000 Islands region!
Having been a fan who followed Suits during its initial run on USA Network from 2011 to 2019, it was a joy to witness its continued success on Netflix in 2023. Intriguingly, the series gained such popularity that NBC decided to produce a spinoff titled Suits L.A., set to feature Stephen Amell from Arrow as the main character Ted Black and slated for release in the 2025 television lineup. Although I’m eagerly anticipating the expansion of the Suits universe with this new series, Amell has hinted at another TV project in development, and truthfully, I find myself more intrigued by that forthcoming small screen production.
Taking to his Instagram account, Amell shared a screenshot of a Deadline article reporting that he’ll be teaming up with Minnie Driver and Hamza Haq for a crime series called Underbelly, which included a first look at Amell’s character, Officer Henry Roland. The six-part series, which will be housed on the Canadian streaming service Crave, hails from Shaftesbury, the production company behind shows like Murdoch Mysteries and Hudson & Rex. Amell, who’s also one of Underbelly’s executive producers, previously worked with Shaftesbury years before he became known around the world for playing Oliver Queen in the Arrowverse, which he highlighted in his post’s caption:
20 years ago, I began collaborating with Shaftesbury for the first time. It’s truly an honor to reunite with them in a leading position, and I must say, this is my debut as an Executive Producer! (I can hardly believe it myself!) Our cast is fantastic, and the team supporting us is exceptional. Underbelly promises to be quite entertaining. However, I strongly advise against letting children watch it under any circumstances whatsoever. Nonetheless, it’s certainly a lot of fun! Stay tuned for more updates.

Stephen Amell, portraying Green Arrow, expressed his displeasure regarding the jab made by Peacemaker: ‘Stephen Amell Responded to a Jibe from Peacemaker Towards Green Arrow, Expressing Disapproval of How Excessive Criticism Has Been Directed at The Arrowverse.’
Initially, Stephen Amell attempted to secure the role of Gibbs in NCIS: Origins, but he eventually ended up playing a different character – Arrow’s Oliver Queen (a.k.a. The Green Arrow). In an interview, he discussed how not getting that part and dealing with other pressures ultimately led him to land Suits L.A. (the spin-off of Suits, set in Los Angeles).
Stephen Amell mentioned “ReGenesis” as a show he appeared in, playing Craig Riddlemeyer in two episodes. Now, he’s set to star in his own series produced by Shaftesbury, and he seems excited about its upcoming release. However, this isn’t a show for children. Fifth Season is involved in financing and distributing “Underbelly,” which is currently being pitched to international buyers at MIPCOM. So we can expect to find out soon where it will be streamed in the U.S.
Originating from the mind of Graeme Stewart, known for his work on “Saving Hope”, the series “Underbelly” unfolds in the 1000 Islands region, which is geographically divided by a river between Canada and the United States. In this story, the character played by Amell, Henry Roland, uncovers clues that suggest a case of missing illicit substances is connected to Hamza Haq’s Tommy Hawley, who was Henry’s childhood friend. As Henry pursues his goal to rescue Tommy and recover the substances, he encounters trouble with a British crime syndicate led by Minnie Driver’s character, Mary Ferguson. The cast also includes Tamara Podemski from “Reservation Dogs”, Christopher Heyerdahl from “Van Helsing”, Katia Edith Wood, Jeremy Watson and Diego Klattenhoff.
Previously mentioned, I’m quite looking forward to catching the series Suits L.A.. Given that I occasionally enjoy crime dramas, Underbelly seems intriguing as it might offer a thrilling viewing experience. Moreover, since this appears to be a limited series with only six episodes, it doesn’t require a significant time investment. Now all I can do is keep an eye on where Underbelly lands when it arrives in the U.S., and check if my streaming service carries it as its home platform.
