As a longtime fan of both Stephen Amell’s work as the Arrow on The CW and the legal drama “Suits,” I was thrilled to hear that Amell would be returning to network primetime TV with a new role in a “Suits” spinoff. However, I have to admit, I was initially taken aback when I learned that this new show wouldn’t involve superheroes or Oliver Queen’s green hood.
Stephen Amell is making a comeback to prime-time television on NBC towards the end of 2024, departing from his previous roles on The CW and his superhero persona as Arrow. Instead, he’s been cast in the pilot for a new series based on Suits, which NBC has now officially greenlit. Although this show won’t be about comic book heroes or crime-fighting, there are hints of Amell’s past work and the character of Oliver Queen that resonate within it.
NBC officially announced the production of “Suits: L.A.” on July 19, with Stephen Amell leading the cast and confirming the addition of Josh McDermitt, Lex Scott Davis, Bryan Greenberg, and Troy Winbush as regulars. (McDermitt’s involvement was previously disclosed in February following Amell’s announcement.) Original “Suits” creator Aaron Korsh continues his role as the showrunner and executive producer for this spinoff based in Los Angeles.
However, none of that information triggered memories of my Arrow reporting experience from 2010 to 2020. NBC even unveiled the show’s synopsis and Stephen Amell’s character’s driving forces. Here it is:
Ted Black, a New York-based ex-prosecutor now based in Los Angeles, has undergone a transformation, representing high-profile clients. However, his law firm is facing tough times and for it to thrive, Ted must assume a role he had despised throughout his career. Amidst this turmoil, Ted’s team of brilliant personalities are put to the test as they grapple with their allegiances to both Ted and one another, all while their professional and personal lives intertwine.
Is Ted Black’s past in New York and his transformation in L.A. going to be as dark and violent as Oliver Queen’s backstory that made him the vengeful Green Arrow? No, I expect a much different scenario for Ted in a legal drama than what Stephen Amell portrayed in the Arrowverse show.
As someone who followed “Arrow” closely during its prime, I found it amusing when I came across the news that Stephen Amell’s new character undergoes a transformation and adopts a role he would have never considered in his past. The interplay of loyalty among this group of characters, with blurred lines between their personal and professional commitments, definitely brings to mind the dynamic atmosphere of Team Arrow.
Though there might not be a large common audience between past viewers of the Arrowverse shows and fans of NBC’s legal dramas, it would add an enjoyable touch to include a few Easter eggs. Stephen Amell reminisced about his experience as the Green Arrow while on the move to Vancouver in March to film another pilot – presumably “Suits: L.A.” – sharing fond memories of shooting the Arrow series premiere.
If he mentioned “Suits: L.A.” in his post, it’s intriguing that filming took place in Vancouver instead of Los Angeles, considering the show is clearly based there. Although it’s common for productions to shoot in British Columbia, representing Vancouver as Star(ling) City in “Arrow” was more feasible. The distinction between Vancouver and Los Angeles is more noticeable when it comes to “Suits: L.A.” Previously, the original “Suits,” set in New York City, also filmed in Canada.
Currently, there’s no confirmation that he went north to shoot the pilot of “Suits: L.A.” in that social media post. We can merely guess based on the likelihood that a “Suits” spinoff being picked up for a series means the chances of “Heels” returning are slim. As of now, NBC hasn’t disclosed when the show will air, and it wasn’t mentioned during their announcement of the premieres for “Law & Order” or any other shows.
NBC’s Instagram announcement confirmed that “Suits: LA” will debut on NBC and stream on Peacock this autumn. As we count down the days for the new series, you can pass the time by re-watching the original “Suits” using a Peacock Premium membership or catching up on “Arrow” with a Netflix subscription.
