As a seasoned Stephen King enthusiast who has weathered countless chilling tales and haunting adaptations, I must admit that this year has been nothing short of a goldmine for fellow fans like myself. From the release of his latest book “You Like It Darker” to the premiere of Mike Flanagan’s “The Life Of Chuck,” it seems as though the King-verse is expanding at an unprecedented rate.
2024 has been a particularly bountiful year for fans of Stephen King, with a multitude of exciting developments. In May, the author released his latest work, a collection titled “You Like It Darker“, followed by Mike Flanagan’s “The Life Of Chuck” premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival. Additionally, Gary Dauberman’s adaptation of “Salem’s Lot” is now available for streaming with a Max subscription. Furthermore, numerous upcoming Stephen King movies and TV shows are either in or have completed production. To top it all off, an unprecedented treat awaits us: Stephen King has penned his first original animated short, which is now accessible online just in time for Halloween.
Last week in my weekly column, The King Beat – all about Stephen King, I shared that an animated short was coming soon, but the official release date hadn’t been revealed yet. Known as Lily, this video is part of a YouTube anthology series called Dark Corners, which brings together skilled genre storytellers to spin chilling yarns tailored for younger audiences. One of the co-creators behind this series is Kate Siegel, who also directed Stephen King’s contribution and lends her voice as the narrator.
The narrative, titled “Lily,” revolves around a timid third grader named Robert who faces the torment of Miss Sidley, a teacher known for her sadistic tendencies at school. In the middle of class, when Robert needs to leave to use the restroom, his cruel instructor takes advantage of the situation and unleashes further cruelty upon him. However, when he is eventually granted permission to go, things take a turn from distressing to alarming as Robert encounters a startling revelation in the boys’ bathroom.
On occasion, Stephen King’s works have been brought to life through numerous films and television series. However, this unique collaboration marks the second time animation and King’s creative mind have synced up. For the first time, he has penned an original animated short titled “Lily“. Previously, his story “Survivor Type” was adapted for one of the two segments in the 2020 animated special Creepshow, with Kiefer Sutherland lending his voice (famously known from Stand By Me).
