Renowned writer Stephen King has proposed the suspension of the 97th Academy Awards, scheduled for March 2 at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood, amidst the ongoing wildfires in Los Angeles. The event honors the best in cinema and will be simultaneously aired on ABC and streamed live for the first time on Hulu.
Yesterday, King expressed his views on his Bluesky account, stating that he won’t cast his vote for favorites in this year’s event. He even suggested canceling the ceremony due to the extensive damage caused by recent events in Los Angeles. In simpler terms, he is saying that it doesn’t seem appropriate to hold grandiose gatherings when so many people have lost their homes in LA, expressing “No glitz with Los Angeles on fire.
Currently, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences plans to hold the Oscars on March 2nd. However, the announcement of the nominees has been moved from January 17th to January 23rd. This date may also change based on the situation in Los Angeles next week.
Should the Academy Awards Be Canceled?
Not voting in the Oscars this year. IMHO they should cancel them. No glitz with Los Angeles on fire.

The discussion over whether the Academy Awards should happen this year doesn’t just involve King, as various individuals have offered their opinions on the topic. More recently, Rosanna Arquette suggested that instead of being canceled, the event could be transformed into a “fundraising telethon” to assist families who lost their homes due to fires. She expressed on BlueSky that it’s about using art for rebuilding, inspiring, and helping those in greatest need.
It would be wonderful if this year’s SAG Awards, Oscars, and Grammys were transformed into fundraising events to support the community, the city of Los Angeles, families who’ve lost their homes, pets, and precious memories, as well as our heroic firefighters who have saved lives.
Besides Hacks actor Jean Smart, others are urging broadcast networks to forgo airing the event in favor of donating the potential earnings to fire victims and firefighters. It’s a tricky predicament because while the Academy Awards could significantly aid the community by stimulating it artistically and providing jobs, hosting such an elaborate affair might come across as insensitive considering recent events. After all, discussing luxury items like designer shoes and borrowed jewelry feels inappropriate when families have suffered devastating losses.
Currently, we’re in a situation where we simply have to wait and observe the outcome. Regardless, it’s clear that trying to satisfy everyone simultaneously is an impossible task. If the event takes place, there will undoubtedly be dissatisfaction, and if it doesn’t? The disappointment will still be present.
As of now, look for the Academy Awards to take place on March 2, 2025.
