What Is Fairy Tale About?

Although Stephen King’s reputation is deeply rooted in horror literature, “Fairy Tale,” as its title suggests, ventures into a distinct genre. Similar to other works such as “The Eyes Of The Dragon” and “The Talisman,” this 2022 novel belongs to the realm of fantasy. However, it also serves as a coming-of-age tale and offers numerous spine-tingling moments within its pages.

Main character Charlie Reade is a teenager from Illinois who experiences a significant shift in his life during a walk. Upon hearing a distressed bark from a dog, he finds that his elderly neighbor Howard Bowditch has suffered an accident. Besides assisting Mr. Bowditch in reaching the hospital, Charlie also accepts the responsibility of caring for the German Shepherd named Radar while Howard recuperates.

Initially, Charlie merely senses a sense of obligation towards the cosmos due to his father, a widower who had been battling alcoholism for years, finally achieving sobriety. However, as the story unfolds, the protagonist forms a strong bond with the elderly man. Following Howard’s demise, it is then that the teenager discovers a hidden mystery: a secluded shed in the backyard concealing a gateway to another dimension known as Empis, which houses a unique sundial capable of reversing the effects of aging.

As Radar grows older and Charlie can’t bear the thought of losing another companion, the teenager makes up his mind to venture into an alternate world with the goal of rescuing the dog. However, what actually lies ahead is an unpredictable reality that reveals his hidden role as a hero fit for a timeless fairy tale legend.

Who Is Making Fairy Tale?

The adaptations of Stephen King’s works sometimes progress swiftly – John Carpenter managed to make the movie version of “Christine” less than eight months after its book release as an example – however, there are instances where obstacles arise in the journey. “Fairy Tale,” unfortunately, falls into this latter category. As mentioned earlier, news about its adaptation broke shortly after the source material’s release, but since then, it has experienced notable alterations behind the scenes.

By September 2022, it became known that Paul Greengrass, the writer/director, would be working on a feature film adaptation of “Fairy Tale,” marking his first attempt at adapting Stephen King’s works. Things seemed very promising for the project only a few weeks later when Universal Pictures secured the production and distribution rights following a competitive bidding war. (Universal had previously collaborated with Greengrass on the Bourne franchise, United 93, and News of the World.) Regrettably, the film’s progress appeared to slow down after this initial announcement.

Good news! The project didn’t completely fall apart during development; instead, it has undergone a transformation. Originally planned as a movie back in 2022, recent reports reveal that “Fairy Tale” will now be a 10-part miniseries, set to premiere in October 2024. Paul Greengrass remains involved, not only as the writer but also as a potential director for some of the episodes. He’s working with J.H. Wyman, known for his work on “Fringe” and “Almost Human,” to adapt his screenplay into a series format. Wyman will serve as the miniseries’ executive producer or showrunner.

Additionally noteworthy is that Universal Pictures is no longer part of the picture. Earlier, when it seemed unfeasible to adapt Fairy Tale into a movie, the studio decided to relinquish the project. Now, A24 is the one responsible for its production, making it their first venture into adapting a Stephen King work as a series.

Who Is Set To Star In Fairy Tale?

At this stage of its development, the miniseries titled Fairy Tale hasn’t begun casting, meaning no actors have been confirmed to appear in the show just yet. Finding a talented young actor to portray Charlie Reade is crucial for the production, as there are numerous other roles that need to be filled, such as Howard Boditch and the vibrant characters Charlie encounters within the world of Empis.

As the evolution of Fairy Tale progresses, we’ll keep refining this feature. Keep an eye out for updates!
