Stephen King's Love Of A Canceled TV Fan-Fave Sparks Hope For A Renewal

As a dedicated fan with over three decades of Stephen King literature under my belt and countless hours spent in front of the small screen watching his adaptations, I can confidently say that the King’s endorsement of Evil on Paramount+ has given this horror enthusiast a glimmer of hope for its potential return. With an extensive knowledge of King’s knack for supporting fellow creators and his keen eye for quality storytelling, it seems only fitting that he would take notice of Evil’s sharp wit, strong chemistry, and occasional scares.

In essence, many TV series set to end this year are expected to leave the 2024 TV lineup quietly without much attention or stir. However, a handful of these shows have dedicated fanbases who hold onto hope for an unexpected revival. And among those few, their fanbase includes none other than the renowned horror author, Stephen King.

In simpler terms, the horror-themed TV series Evil, known for its chilling storylines, was unexpectedly canceled in February 2024 before its fourth season even premiered. Despite being a highly-rated show on Paramount+, the people in charge opted to abandon the creators’ future plot ideas and terminate it instead. Fans were upset at first, but as Season 4 progressed, their calls for a fifth season have become louder and louder, culminating in a strong demand for renewal when the season ended with a four-episode extension in late August.

How Stephen King Entered The Evil Mix

In an interview before the current finale of “Evil” (at the moment), Stephen King spoke on PBS News Hour’s Canvas segment about his new anthology collection titled “You Like It Darker”. During their conversation, he expressed admiration for the series, featuring Mike Colter, Katja Herbers, Aasif Mandvi and Michael Emerson among others. Here’s how he phrased it:

“I enjoy the TV series ‘Evil’ on Paramount+. It’s truly remarkable – it’s full of humor, intelligence, and has a razor-sharp edge.”

Following the release and circulation of that interview, it eventually caught Katja Herbers’ eager gaze and she posted the link on X, asking optimistically to whoever was listening, as shown in the following excerpt:

Despite the enthusiasm to revive “Evil” on television with its terrifying dolls, haunted kids, and Leland Townsend’s schemes, Herbers’ emoji might imply that this is an uphill battle, suggesting that King’s words are a final attempt to breathe fresh life into the series.

However, after that, King further expressed his admiration for the show by reposting Herbers’ message and adding additional praises for the series, as demonstrated in the following:

Intelligent, intriguing, sometimes downright terrifying. Moreover, the camaraderie among the three supernatural investigators is robust and, as Kamala puts it, full of joy.

King is not just about promoting his own upcoming films and series; he’s equally comfortable lifting up other creators with his social media endorsements. From praising new books in the horror genre, suggesting classic movies, to recommending TV shows where elevators become the most terrifying settings, King is a strong advocate for various creative works.

Could his words make a difference in the future course of ‘Evil’? At this stage, it’s uncertain, but they certainly won’t harm its possibilities in any way. In the meantime, consider exploring several shows that cater well to fans of ‘Evil’.
