The acting pieces are coming together for Voltron.
Sterling K. Brown, Rita Ora, and John Kim are joining the cast of the live-action movie adaptation of a popular mecha anime, which is being directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber for Amazon MGM Studios.
The threesome are set to team up with Henry Cavill and fresh face Daniel Quinn-Toye for an upcoming production, filming commences down under in Australia from December onwards.
Voltron originates from two Japanese science fiction series, namely Beast King GoLion and Kikou Kantai Dairugger XV. These shows were adapted, edited, and dubbed for syndication under the title Voltron: Defender of the Universe, which aired in the 80’s. The story revolves around a team of five young pilots, each piloting individual vehicles known as Robot Lions. These lions combine to create a colossal robot called Voltron.
During VoltCon in Indianapolis last October, Thurber, the director, reassured fans of Voltron that the upcoming movie will honor the original spirit and essence of the series. He mentioned that a fresh team of pilots will be introduced, while maintaining the beloved iconic aspects as they adapt Voltron for live-action. The script was co-written by Thurber and Ellen Shanman.
The following individuals are responsible for the production: Todd Lieberman (via Hidden Pictures), Bob Koplar of World Events Productions, David Hoberman from Thurber and Hobie Films.
Actor Brown received an Oscar nomination for his role alongside Jeffrey Wright in the critically acclaimed dramedy, “American Fiction,” directed by Cord Jefferson on Amazon MGM. He’ll soon be seen starring in and producing the Hulu drama series, “Paradise,” created by Dan Fogelman, and is set to start filming for “By Any Means” under the direction of Elegance Bratton alongside Mark Wahlberg.
