Steve Kornacki to Exit MSNBC For NBC as SpinCo Chess Pieces Fall Into Place

One of MSNBC’s regular contributors during election nights is moving to NBC News, reflecting the ongoing reorganization within Comcast’s “SpinCo” initiative which has been causing shifts among the talent lineups across their news networks.

A representative from NBC News confirmed that Steve Kornacki, known as MSNBC’s data expert and frequent guest on their “big board” during election nights, has signed a contract that will lead him to depart from MSNBC. In his new role at NBC News and NBC Sports, he will serve as the network’s primary data analyst.

Or, more informally:

NBC News confirmed that Steve Kornacki, their go-to guy for data on MSNBC, has signed a deal to leave MSNBC and focus on working with NBC News and NBC Sports. In his new role, he’ll be the main data analyst for both networks.

Kornacki is anticipated to regularly feature on shows such as Meet the Press, NBC Nightly News, Today, and the NBC News Now streaming service, in addition to appearing occasionally on these platforms currently. He will also introduce his data analysis approach, along with his distinctive style of wearing slacks and rolled-up sleeves, to various sports programs like NFL football, the Olympics, and the Kentucky Derby on NBC Sports.

Meanwhile, his departure from MSNBC occurs as the cable network is working on establishing a fresh TV schedule and an entirely new news division before the planned spinoff, SpinCo, takes place later this year. The revamped programming lineup of MSNBC will debut this month, while they are actively recruiting for their news operation under the newly appointed senior VP, Scott Matthews.

In the split, MSNBC will retain its name but will move into fresh offices and studios in New York City. Additionally, it plans to recruit its own team based in Washington D.C.

It’s possible that other broadcasters who work for both NBC and MSNBC may have to make a decision about their allegiance within the next few months. However, Kornacki’s departure is significant because it could lead to an increase in his on-air appearances across NBC programming, thereby providing him with a broader platform for his data analysis.

The Los Angeles Times first reported Kornacki’s move.
