Steve McQueen’s Iconic ‘Le Mans’ Heuer Monaco Watch to Feature in Sotheby's Important Watches Auction

As a seasoned gamer with a penchant for all things vintage and a soft spot for racing legends, the news of Sotheby’s auctioning off Steve McQueen’s iconic Heuer Monaco has sent my heart racing! I remember watching the thrilling scenes from Le Mans as a young lad, mesmerized by the speed, the drama, and the undeniable coolness of ‘The King of Cool’ himself. To own a piece of that history, a timepiece worn by one of the greatest racers on the silver screen, would be nothing short of a dream come true!

As a passionate admirer of horology, I’m thrilled to share that Sotheby’s will be showcasing an exclusive collection of historically significant Heuer timepieces as part of the Heuer Champions series at their upcoming New York Important Watches Auction. One of the highlights of this assortment is the legendary Heuer Monaco, which was worn by the unforgettable racing icon, Steve McQueen, during the filming of the 1971 classic, Le Mans.

The watch, valued between $500,000 and $1 million USD, will be publicly displayed for the first time in more than fifty years during this event. This unique piece, known as Heuer ref. 1133B, is housed in Monaco’s iconic square-shaped case. The dial, a striking gray-blue hue, stands out beautifully against its white sub-counters and minute track. Its racing heritage is emphasized by bold red accents on the hands and hour markers.

The lot labeled “Heuer Champions” additionally features a variety of vintage chronograph watches, reminiscent of the brand’s rich motorsport heritage. Alongside the iconic Heuer Monaco worn by Steve McQueen, these pieces will be offered for sale at Sotheby’s Important Watches Auction in New York City during December.

Between August 14th and 17th, the timepiece is scheduled to be showcased at RM Sotheby’s main auction in Monterey, California. Later, from December 5th to 10th, it will be displayed again in New York. After that, it will be up for bidding during the Important Watches Auction on December 11th.
