Steven Soderbergh misses the Old Hitler.
The “Sex, Lies and Videotape” auteur told Variety how much he pines for President George W. Bush.
Reflecting on the times of the George W. Bush era now feels like a nostalgic longing for simpler days. It’s hard to believe that we could ever yearn for such complexity again.
During his time in the White House, the two-term Republican president faced accusations likening him to Adolf Hitler. Notably, Kanye West made a statement at a telethon event claiming that the president had little concern for African Americans.
That was news to African nations that received billions in aid from the 43rd president.
Soderbergh discussed various topics related to his new movie, “Black Bag,” during an interview with Variety. This thriller features Michael Fassbender as a spy who must uncover treasonous ties within his wife’s activities. In addition to Fassbender, the film also stars Cate Blanchett, Naomie Harris, Pierce Brosnan, and Regé-Jean Page.
During the interview, Soderbergh discussed various aspects of his film, but the conversation eventually shifted towards contemporary politics when prompted by the interviewer.
It’s all the excuse he needed to tee off on President Donald Trump.
At present, our understanding of what an office represents is undergoing change. We need to question whether the old concepts of “hero” and “villain” still hold validity. It seems there’s someone in that position whose actions largely correspond with what we’d label as villainous in a film. However, this individual was elected by many people. This leaves one pondering if we’ve been misguided. Could it be that audiences are increasingly favoring the villain in movies, and we’ve just been pretending otherwise?
Soderbergh refrained from commenting on the former president, who concealed his cognitive decline from the populace, surrendered Afghanistan to the Taliban, and aggressively attacked freedom of expression in various arenas.
Perhaps his next Variety chat will tackle those issues.
