Would you seize an opportunity to grab some of Walter White’s highly-praised “Blue Sky” if given the chance? This question seems to have been an obvious choice for several characters in the AMC series, Breaking Bad. Despite the fact that all drugs used during filming are mandated to be imitations, the artisans who fabricate these fake substances manage to create remarkably realistic replicas.
According to The Guardian, Robb Wilson King, who designed sets for Breaking Bad, immersed himself in the art of cooking meth to create drugs so lifelike that some were actually taken from the filming location.
King isn’t just concerned about the appearance of the product; instead, a significant portion of the budget for his drug-centric series is dedicated to ensuring that on-screen drug use and manufacturing is not only lawful but also accurately portrayed. By consulting with Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) officers and Albuquerque drug dealers he befriended, King achieved an exceptionally genuine depiction of the locations, individuals, and items associated with meth production. Despite the intimidating nature of associating with meth dealers while collaborating with the DEA, this unique partnership resulted in a strikingly authentic portrayal of the world of meth cooking.
On the set of the popular AMC series, the portrayed meth was so authentic that King felt compelled to negotiate with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). Some drugs were secreted away by cast or staff members, but when everything was wrapped up, King ultimately surrendered his remaining convincing supply to the DEA.
We needed to give all items back to the DEA for them to dispose of it as though it was genuine, to prevent it from circulating on the streets.
Let’s just hope no one from the cast or crew, or DEA, attempted to smoke that famous “Blue Sky.”
Creativity Is The Greatest Tool In Depicting Drug Use
In the production of shows like “Breaking Bad” (and many others that focus heavily on drugs), achieving the accurate appearance of the fictional “Blue Sky” was just as crucial as portraying the environment where the drug was manufactured or used. A more recent example of creating an authentic depiction of drug use in film is found in Sam Levinson’s “Euphoria”, where the camera and set play a significant role in conveying realistic drug scenes.
Philipp Barnett, a key figure behind the scenes of the TV series featuring Zendaya that tackles teen drug abuse, discussed with The Guardian his innovative camera work methods used to portray Rue’s drug-induced states.
As a movie enthusiast, I was captivated by a scene from the first season where Zendaya’s character, in a drug-induced state, ascends stairs and traverses a wobbly hallway. What made this sequence especially intriguing was the fact that the entire set was constructed on a pivot, allowing it to be moved to replicate the instability of that hallway.
In Barnett’s portrayal, not just the substances themselves were authentic stand-ins for drugs such as cocaine, often made with ingredients like glucose, B12, vitamin C, or lactose powder; instead, the ambiance, lighting, and cinematography took on a greater significance in portraying Rue’s addiction realistically. The eagerly awaited third season of this popular HBO series is now in production, promising to showcase even more convincing, albeit fake, drugs crafted by skilled set designers such as King.
