Stranger Things Creators' Latest Season 5 Comments Have Me More Worried Than Ever About Max (And Maybe Lucas)

As a seasoned gamer and die-hard Stranger Things fan with over two decades of binge-watching under my belt, I’ve learned to brace myself for the emotional rollercoaster that comes with every new season. The anticipation for Season 5 has been building like never before, and the latest comments from the Duffer brothers about Max’s condition have sent chills down my spine.

Fans eagerly anticipate new episodes of Netflix’s popular Hawkins-set horror drama, “Stranger Things,” with many hoping for Season 5 to premiere soon, though it may not be on the 2024 TV schedule. A significant concern among viewers revolves around Sadie Sink’s character Max, who ended up in a coma at the end of Season 4. Recently, the Duffer brothers have fueled this anxiety with their latest statements.

The actress, affectionately known as a rising star in Hollywood, recently spoke with Variety about her current position and navigating the challenges of fame, particularly since the highly anticipated return of ‘Stranger Things.’ When asked about the condition of beloved character Max, she hinted that Max will be present in some form, though the specifics remain unclear. The creators, Matt and Ross Duffer, provided additional details, suggesting a potentially troubling scenario for Max and possibly Lucas, played by Caleb McLaughlin. In their words:

  • Matt Duffer: She’s going to play a part in the season
  • Ross Duffer: But we don’t want to reveal how that’s possible.
  • Matt Duffer: Right, because she’s in a coma. . . . I think she’s grown just more confident as an actor and in her choices. We did film a scene the other day with her that was just absolutely heartbreaking. I don’t know how she hits those notes.

Matt Duffer’s conversation with Max being in a coma and praising Sadie Sink for her acting choices is quite intriguing. While it’s possible that Sadie could deliver exceptional coma-acting performances that leave everyone amazed, those scenes might primarily involve her lying still rather than requiring much active acting.

In other words, it seems likely that the emotional scene referred to by the co-creator does not transpire near Max’s hospital bed. Given that she has already lost her troubled brother Billy, I find myself pondering what sort of heartrending moments she might face without them directly involving her or Lucas encountering some distress.

Is it possible that Matt Duffer was hinting at Lucas’ character being written out of the story? Alternatively, he might be alluding to a self-sacrificing scene for Lucas, where she bids farewell to others before facing some peril. I could spin more doomsday theories about what may transpire in Season 5, but nobody needs such stress so early on.

Regarding her role in Season 5, Sadie Sink mentioned just one particular action related to her character engaging in a physical confrontation, an act that resonates strongly with Max’s preferred song. In her own words:

They love having me run. That’s all I’ll say.

She admitted that the previous week of filming was unusually busy, causing her to underestimate how hectic things could become. With such a big cast, there are moments of idle time for some actors based on which characters appear together in scenes. Thus, it seems like at least one episode will focus heavily on Max’s actions. Let’s hope it won’t involve any emotional turmoil or sad events.

Let’s cross our fingers that her Walkman is the only thing that malfunctions. It wouldn’t be ideal, but dealing with a new cassette player is preferable to attending a friend’s funeral. At least we won’t have to worry about Will’s hairstyle anymore, thanks to his recent change. Additionally, it seems we no longer need to worry if Stranger Things will ever have its own line of candles because they are now available.

We’re still waiting on a premiere date for Season 5 of Stranger Things, but check out what the Duffer brothers are working on next in the meantime.
