As a gamer who’s spent countless hours binge-watching Stranger Things and dissecting every minor detail like a true Dungeons & Dragons player, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and apprehension seeing that iconic alphabet wall from Season 1 in Shawn Levy’s latest production photo.
Regretfully, “Stranger Things” won’t be part of the 2024 TV lineup, but here’s some positive news: production is moving full steam ahead. As for what we know about “ST” Season 5, information is still scarce, but the creators, Matt and Ross Duffer, have occasionally shared some behind-the-scenes snaps to celebrate filming weeks. Executive Producer Shawn Levy has also shared similar photos. However, a recent image from his latest collection has raised concerns for me.
Shawn Levy posted several images on Instagram, offering behind-the-scenes glimpses during filming for the last season of the popular Netflix series. Among these photos, there’s a detail that takes me back to the show’s initial run – a connection to the very first season.

The image under discussion features The Duffer Brothers with Finn Wolfhard and Noah Schnapp, along with an unrecognized team member. Neither Wolfhard nor Schnapp appear to be dressed for a scene, suggesting they’re simply catching up with the show’s makers during their downtime, which isn’t particularly noteworthy. However, what stands out is the backdrop – a set piece that strongly resembles the alphabet wall created by Joyce Byers in her living room during Season 1 of the series.
It’s quite plausible that there’s a valid explanation as to why the Season 1 set piece is still here, yet no reason was provided. In such a case, I am free to entertain various theories. Indeed, if my lessons from ‘Stranger Things’ have shown me anything, it’s that nothing should ever be taken at face value!
Is Someone Stuck In The Upside Down Again?
Upon noticing the famous prop, I instantly wondered if Will or another character could find themselves trapped within the Upside Down during this season. It’s possible that Eddie Munson, a character many fans believe isn’t truly deceased, might be the one in trouble.
Since Season 4 concluded with events unfolding differently, it seems unlikely that anyone will find themselves trapped inside the Upside Down. Instead, they’ll be venturing into it in search of the malevolent Vecna. It’s possible, then, that Joyce has returned to her home in Hawkins and is working on rebuilding the wall for more convenient communication with those who opt to delve into the alternate dimension.
Could It Be A Hint That We’re Getting Flashbacks Or A Total Reset Of Events?
A widely-discussed speculation among fans about Season 5 of Stranger Things is the possibility that the characters will deal with temporal anomalies. This could involve glimpses into the past, traveling through time, or even a complete rewind to the initial season’s events – only time will tell for sure.
In the first season, Will didn’t appear much in the Upside Down. So, it could be that the creators, the Duffer Brothers, might be thinking about filming some flashback sequences featuring a younger Byers character. Given this, it seems logical to increase scenes where Joyce tries to reach Will through the wall.
There’s an alternative scenario where the reappearance of the wall might indicate that Season 5 concludes with a sort of rewind to certain events from the beginning. In this version, Will could break free from the wall and run to his mother, rather than venturing further into the Upside Down. Although it seems far-fetched, it’s not entirely out of the question.
Is This Just A Leftover Set Piece?
The least exciting hypothetical is that the wall is a leftover, standing set that the crews never tore down because of how iconic it is. However, it would be a little weird to still have a set piece from Season 1 hanging around the sound stage of an active set when the characters don’t even live in that house anymore. After all, sound stages are massive, but keeping sets you aren’t going to use is a waste of valuable space.
Regrettably, Shawn Levy fails to explain why the wall is shown in his post, and it seems that viewers aren’t too preoccupied with it based on comments. Fingers crossed that when Season 5 eventually arrives on Netflix (hopefully in their 2025 TV lineup), we’ll finally get some answers.
