Grief can be overwhelming, and it seems there’s no specific timeframe for when it might subside, if it ever does. However, on television, death can be quite thrilling. On TV, death can provide an exciting twist. The demise of a beloved TV character can be heart-wrenching, yet often serves to escalate the drama within a series. This is what makes it so potent for scriptwriters.
In a fresh and commendable twist, Stranger Things has chosen a unique path that’s drawn both praise and criticism. Critics have joked that the show is reluctant to eliminate any major characters from the main cast, suggesting that the Duffer Brothers lack the courage to make such a move. However, this oversimplifies the situation. If indeed a character were to perish in Season 5, it would be Murray, but such an outcome seems contrived. This isn’t negative at all; in fact, it’s what makes Stranger Things continue to stand out as something more than just a combination of leftover sci-fi elements.
It wouldn’t fit with Stranger Things’ essence to eliminate a key character, as it could come across as an desperate move to boost tension. Instead, the show relies on its tight-knit characters to keep everything cohesive. Just like the films that inspired it, the chemistry among the actors is crucial for the storyline, and losing one would disrupt this harmony. If it’s too late for any main character’s death to bring enough weight, what can be done about Stranger Things’ packed cast list? This might be a controversial opinion, but for the most part, the show has done a good job at that. Realistically, some of these characters aren’t given enough personality to even call them characters. They serve their purpose in the show, to add another body, but again, Stranger Things is not a show about the depth of the characters. The important ones are normally given enough attention, and the Duffers have always been good at divvying up the responsibilities in the final few episodes, where everyone can get a piece of the exciting stuff.
The death of Murray would probably shake up the world of Stranger Things, and his death would make the most sense, given his weak impact on the central story. It’s a taught belief of TV watchers that death is one way to make a show more interesting, but this isn’t the case for the Netflix hit. The Duffers are right to keep their huge cast alive. The cast keeps it interesting, not necessarily for their depth as individuals, but because of the time we spent growing up with them.
