Streaming Ratings: ‘Those About to Die’ Gets Olympics Boost

As a dedicated streaming enthusiast with years of binge-watching under my belt, I must say that the week of July 22-28, 2024, was nothing short of a golden age for television. The Olympics on Peacock undeniably stole the show, but the performance of other series on the platform was nothing short of impressive.


During the week of July 22nd through July 28th, it was primarily the Olympics that most viewers tuned into on Peacock. However, two other programs on the NBCUniversal streaming platform also experienced a successful week in terms of viewership.

As a passionate viewer, I can’t help but share my excitement about “Those About to Die,” the captivating swords-and-sandals drama that’s been making waves recently! This epic series has stormed its way into the top 10 original series for the week, and it seems like the powerful promotion during NBCUniversal’s Olympics telecasts has played a significant role in this achievement. In fact, the series managed to garner an impressive 399 million minutes of viewing time for the week!

Despite slightly decreasing from its previous two weeks, “Love Island” still maintained a robust viewership in the week following its July 21 season finale. With 724 million minutes watched (across earlier seasons on Hulu, Netflix and the current one), this figure is impressive for an unscripted series that didn’t air any new episodes during the measured period.

During the initial three days of the Olympics, a staggering 4.5 billion minutes were streamed across Peacock and NBCU’s other digital platforms, making it undoubtedly the most-watched streaming event of the week. Interestingly, despite this massive viewership, the Olympics are not incorporated in Nielsen’s weekly rankings due to their exclusion of live sports. Conversely, the top-streamed title for the week, outside of Paris, was “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire,” which premiered on Netflix July 22 and garnered a total of 1.41 billion minutes viewed.

Four shows surpassed the 10-million-hour milestone, and three of them achieved this feat a week ago in Bluey (1.06 billion hours), Cobra Kai (1.05 billion), and House of the Dragon (1.04 billion). Family Guy also entered this exclusive club with its highest number yet on Hulu at 1.03 billion minutes watched.

For the first time, two additional shows from their original lineups made it to the top 10: Apple TV+’s “Presumed Innocent” (387 million minutes) during its finale week, and Netflix’s three-episode documentary series “Dirty Pop: The Boy Band Scam” (369 million). In movie rankings, Netflix’s “Hillbilly Elegy” continued in the top 10 with 314 million minutes watched, but saw a drop of 43% in viewership one week after the announcement that its subject, J.D. Vance, was nominated as the Republican vice presidential nominee.

Nielsen’s streaming statistics pertain exclusively to viewing on traditional television sets and do not encompass minutes spent watching on computers or mobile devices. These ratings solely quantify U.S. viewers, disregarding those in other nations. Here are the most popular streaming titles from July 22-28, 2024:
