As an ardent admirer of Rajkummar Rao, I find his journey to be nothing short of inspiring. From humble beginnings, marked by financial hardships, to becoming one of Bollywood’s most sought-after actors, his story is a testament to resilience and determination.
Currently, Rajkummar Rao is basking in the triumph of his recent movie, Stree 2, which has been a massive box office smash with Shraddha Kapoor by his side. In a recent chat, he discussed why he decided to omit ‘Yadav’ from his last name. He explained that there were no industry guidelines behind this choice and admitted that he rarely used his surname anyway. He went on to share that the change was made to prevent any confusion with other actors named Rajkummar, saying “There is no such rule. I seldom used my surname.”
In a chat with Shubhankar Mishra, Rajkummar Rao explained the reasoning behind his name change. He mentioned that contrary to popular belief, there’s no tradition in Bollywood requiring stage names. He further elaborated, “My passport only lists me as Rajkummar (There’s no such rule. I had never used a surname before. Even my passport only shows Rajkummar).”
He explained that due to the existence of several individuals named Rajkummar in the film industry, this choice was made to avoid confusion. By adopting the surname ‘Rao’, he wanted to create a unique persona. As he put it, “To prevent misunderstandings about who I am among Rajkummar Hirani, Santoshi, Gupta or myself, and since Rao is a title often used by Yadavs, I began using it.”
In a conversation with Raj Shamani, Rajkummar Rao spoke about his difficult childhood, characterized by financial struggles, yet never reaching a state of hunger. He was raised in a shared household with two other siblings, and despite the financial hardships, his mother ensured they never felt lacking. She often sought assistance from relatives to fulfill their necessities. Interestingly, for a span of two to three years, Rajkummar’s school fees were covered by his teachers, who saw value in his education, even though he was more outstanding in extracurricular activities such as dance and martial arts rather than academics.
On the career side, Rajkummar Rao had a bustling year, working on films such as Srikanth and the sports drama Mr. & Mrs. Mahi alongside Janhvi Kapoor. His recent release is Stree 2, a sequel to the 2018 blockbuster, which also stars Shraddha Kapoor, Aparshakti Khurana, Abhishek Banerjee, and Pankaj Tripathi. Coming soon, he’ll feature in Vicky Vidya Ka Woh Wala Video with Triptii Dimri, set to premiere on October 11.
