Kitao Sakurai is kicking it to the street.
Known primarily for crafting, guiding, and overseeing The Eric Andre Show, the filmmaker is now being selected to take charge of directing Street Fighter – a live-action movie adaption of the iconic Capcom video game, produced by Legendary Entertainment.
Capcom plays a significant role in the movie’s development, as Legendary collaborates with them both in creating and financing the project. The movie is set to be released by Sony on March 20, 2026.
One of the longest-running fighting video game series, originating from the 1987 arcade game “Street Fighter”, has consistently set the bar high for arcade fighting games, with “Street Fighter II” establishing a benchmark in 1991. This game was groundbreaking as it introduced character selection and various combat styles, transforming one-on-one gameplay. The most recent installment of this series, “Street Fighter 6”, was launched in June 2023 and was honored with the Best Fighting Game award at the 2023 Game Awards.
Hollywood attempted a cinematic remake of it twice previously, one being the controversial 1994 production featuring Jean-Claude Van Damme. This film initially flopped but eventually grew a dedicated fanbase as a cult classic.
Earlier versions of Street Fighter featured Danny and Michael Philippou, the Australian twin directors known for their successful horror movie Talk to Me.
I just teamed up again with Andre for the hilarious flick “Bad Trip,” a project I co-wrote and directed. This comedy gem, now streaming on Netflix, also features the talents of Tiffany Haddish and Lil Rel Howery. As a gamer, I can’t wait to hit play and enjoy the ride!
Apart from that, he is also fulfilling roles as an executive producer for Netflix and A24’s second season of the show “Beef,” directing the pilot and numerous episodes for the upcoming Amazon Prime Video series titled “Butterfly” starring Daniel Dae Kim. Additionally, he has directed several episodes for Peacock’s post-apocalyptic adaptation of the video game “Twisted Metal.
Sakurai is represented by UTA and 3 Arts.
