‘Street Fighter’ Movie Removed From Calendar as Phoebe Dynevor Shark Thriller Moves Back a Year

As a fervent admirer, I’ve been keeping tabs on the anticipated Street Fighter film, but it seems to be lingering in a sort of cinematic purgatory, postponing its grand entrance. On the other hand, Phoebe Dynevor‘s shark thriller is gearing up for a dramatic debut, albeit a bit later than initially expected.

Sony Pictures has taken the decision to withdraw Legendary’s “Street Fighter” movie from its release schedule for theaters, which was initially planned for March 20, 2026. This film is based on the well-known video game series and is jointly developed and produced by Capcom. As of now, the cast members have not been revealed.

Last month, The Hollywood Reporter announced that Kitao Sakurai, who directed Netflix’s Eric André-led comedy feature Bad Trip in 2021, will now helm the video game adaptation. Previously, directors Danny and Michael Philippou (known for Talk to Me) had been associated with a different version of the project. The distribution agreement between Sony and Legendary ended last year.

It was recently revealed that Kitao Sakurai, director of Netflix’s 2021 comedy film Bad Trip, will take over directing the video game adaptation. Earlier, Danny and Michael Philippou (known for their work on Talk to Me) were involved in a different version of this project. Sony and Legendary ended their distribution partnership last year.)

Apart from that, the shark movie directed by Tommy Wirkola, starring Dynevor, has been renamed Shiver. Originally known as Beneath the Storm, this Sony production is now scheduled to premiere in theaters on July 3, 2026. The release date was pushed back from its initial plan of Aug. 1, 2025, for a summer blockbuster debut instead.

In the upcoming movie titled “Shiver“, Whitney Peak and Djimon Hounsou will share the screen. Adam McKay and Kevin Messick are set as producers for this production. Interestingly, it’s slated to go head-to-head with Universal’s “Minions 3” at cinemas during the Fourth of July weekend in 2026.

The Street Fighter series began with the arcade fighting game that was launched in 1987, and it was succeeded by the hugely successful Street Fighter II in 1991. A movie titled Street Fighter was released in 1994, featuring Jean-Claude Van Damme as Guile, Raúl Juliá as M. Bison, and Ming-Na Wen as Chun-Li. In 2009, the film Street Fighter: The Chronicles of Chun-Li was distributed by 20th Century Fox.

The thriving Hollywood film industry is recognizing the worth of turning video games into movies, spurred by the recent triumphs like The Super Mario Bros. Movie and the Sonic the Hedgehog series. Coming to theaters next month, Warner Bros. presents their own video game adaptation: A Minecraft Movie.
