Student of the Year turns 12: When Shah Rukh Khan's absence made Karan Johar feel 'empty' while shooting Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan, and Sidharth Malhotra's film

As a lifestyle expert with a keen interest in Bollywood and its intricacies, I find myself deeply moved by the journey of Karan Johar and his films over the years. The 12th anniversary of Student of the Year is an opportune moment to reflect on the emotional rollercoaster that was the making of this film.

12 years ago today, on October 19th, 2012, the movie “Student of the Year” was first released. This film marked the debut of Varun Dhawan, Alia Bhatt, and Sidharth Malhotra in leading roles, with Karan Johar directing for the first time without Shah Rukh Khan. In this article, let’s look back at the time when director Johar admitted that he felt a void or emptiness during the filming due to Khan’s absence.

During an earlier interview on Zoom while promoting Student of the Year, Karan Johar was questioned about his feelings regarding the movie being his first without Shah Rukh Khan’s involvement. In response, Karan explained that SRK played a crucial role as a producer in the film. Additionally, he admitted that when casting Varun Dhawan, Alia Bhatt, and Sidharth Malhotra for the movie, he found himself drawing comparisons to Shah Rukh Khan.

Karan admitted, “At first, there was a hollow sensation within me, and I often caught myself thinking, ‘Shah Rukh would handle this situation,’ or ‘Shah Rukh would approach it this way.’ It wasn’t until I recognized how absurd that comparison was that I understood. Comparing them to one of the finest actors in the industry, and placing such immense pressure on their debut film is utterly ludicrous.

Instead, Karan shared that the initial sensation subsided following the initial week of filming, merging into the daily routines of his fellow actors on set. Remarkably, he confessed that by midway, he started seeing them as his SRK and Kajol in character.

Today, Karan Johar marked a significant occasion – the 12th anniversary of Student of the Year. In his post, he expressed, “Today carries a unique charm! Looking back at the film I started 12 years ago, it was all about having the best experience possible. And indeed, it turned out to be an extraordinary time for me!
