As a cinephile with a penchant for superhero films and an extensive knowledge of DC Comics, I find Scott Eastwood‘s expressed desire to play Batman intriguing, if not entirely realistic given the current state of the DCEU. While his performance as Lieutenant GQ Edwards in Suicide Squad was brief, he certainly had the potential to grow into a more significant role, perhaps even Nightwing as rumored.
However, I must admit that Eastwood’s Batman aspirations remind me of a joke from an old Adam West-era Batman show: “Why rob a bank, when you can be Batman?” The truth is, the role of Batman is one of the most coveted in Hollywood, and competition for it is fierce. But who knows, if James Gunn or Warner Bros. are looking for a fresh face to don the cape and cowl, Eastwood might just be the man for the job. After all, stranger things have happened in the world of comic book movies!
2016’s “Suicide Squad” initially received mixed reviews within the DCEU, but it has since gained a dedicated fanbase, particularly after the release of Zack Snyder’s original cut of “Justice League.” The film featured Margot Robbie, Will Smith, Joel Kinnaman, Jai Courtney, Jay Hernandez, Karen Fukuhara as the primary members of the team. Jared Leto played a contentious version of The Joker, while Viola Davis portrayed the formidable antagonist Amanda Waller. It’s easy to overlook Scott Eastwood’s role in “Suicide Squad” as Lieutenant GQ Edwards, a US Army officer who supervised the team alongside Kinnaman’s Rick Flag. Although Eastwood had limited screen time in the film, he expresses a desire for a return to the DC universe in a major capacity.
Without a doubt, I lean more towards Batman,” Eastwood expressed during a chat with Screen Rant. When asked about potential future collaborations with James Gunn and Warner Bros., he kept his cards close to his chest, suggesting no recent discussions have taken place. Given that Batman is now an integral character in the DC Universe, Eastwood casually mentioned his interest in stepping into the iconic role, hinting at a possible donning of the cape (or cowl). He further added:
As a kid growing up, I was always fascinated by the tales of Batman, a hero who led a secret double life. The way he balanced his alter ego, Bruce Wayne, and the Dark Knight was just mind-blowing to me. I remember staying up late at night, reading comics under my blanket fort, completely captivated by this character. It wasn’t just about the cool gadgets or the cape; it was about the struggle, the pain, and the determination that made Batman a character more intriguing than many others in the superhero world. Even today, I can’t help but feel a connection to him, as I too have faced my own battles and learned to navigate the complexities of life while keeping up appearances. Batman is much more than a cape-wearing vigilante; he’s a symbol of resilience, a beacon for those who feel lost, and an inspiration for anyone striving to make a difference in their world.
In 2016, David Ayer’s movie, Suicide Squad, faced criticism from reviewers, earning a 26% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Yet, supporters of Zack Snyder have recently shown interest in Suicide Squad, advocating for it to receive a director’s cut version. During a recent conversation, Eastwood was asked about the unseen director’s cut, to which he responded, “I’m not sure if I’ve ever watched his director’s cut. Is there a way to view it?
Scott Eastwood Might Have Been Nightwing In the DCEU
In the movie “Suicide Squad,” Scott Eastwood’s part was minimized to only a few lines. However, speculation arose on the web that his character might be developed further into Dick Grayson for a possible sequel. Grayson is initially Batman’s Robin, and later moves away from the Bat Cave to launch his own superhero journey as Nightwing, who is renowned in DC Comics for having the most celebrated derrière.
Eastwood expressed uncertainty about reprising the role of Nightwing in a potential sequel, but he did acknowledge discussions about transforming his character. He explained, “They were tossing around ideas about who I might return as, and we could change things here and there.” However, they hadn’t solidified any plans yet… they were still figuring it out. On the other hand, the new DC Universe lineup will feature Dick Grayson as Robin in the upcoming animated film titled “Dynamic Duo”.
