Engaging in legal work with a fabricated law degree – could anything possibly go smooth? This is the conundrum that the TV show “Suits” seeks to explore as high-powered lawyer Harvey Specter (Gabriel Macht) recruits Mike Ross (Patrick J. Adams), a bike messenger who leverages his exceptional memory skills to help students ace their LSATs, into his firm. Once Harvey discovers Mike’s unique talent and legal acumen, he concocts a plan to hire him, keeping his unconventional background under wraps. However, maintaining this secret proves more challenging than anticipated, particularly when Mike develops romantic feelings for paralegal Rachel Zane (Meghan Markle). These hidden truths even result in Mike serving time in prison during “Suits” Season 6.
It can be confidently stated that the character of Mike was instrumental to the success of “Suits,” as his storyline played a crucial role throughout the show. Fans who followed the series from its early seasons, which largely revolved around Mike’s secret, were taken aback by his departure, as it was a significant and solemn event for them. This article delves into why Patrick J. Adams chose to leave the show and discusses what transpired when he made a return.
When does Mike leave Suits?
In the drama series “Suits”, during Season 7’s Episode 16, titled “Good-Bye”, Mike Ross and Rachel Zane find themselves embarking on a new phase in their relationship along with a job change. As they prepare for their wedding, an offer arrives to manage a law firm in Seattle. Seizing this opportunity means they must hasten their wedding plans. In the ensuing chaos, Donna Paulsen is scrambling to organize the last-minute nuptials, while Mike tackles a case involving lead poisoning of a school’s water supply at the Eastside Legal Clinic. Test results from soil samples come back negative for lead, causing Mike distress. His already packed schedule becomes even more congested when Donna asks him to console Louis Litt, who is disheartened as the law firm’s future remains uncertain.
At Mike and Rachel’s wedding celebration, Harvey expresses his regret for not trusting Mike’s abilities to become a senior partner earlier. He then extends the offer, but Mike declines, explaining he’s grown weary of being relied upon to rescue the firm. This climactic scene provides a fitting end to the arcs of Mike and Rachel’s characters, as Meghan Markle departed the show to embark on her real-life marriage.
Why did Patrick Abrams leave Suits?
Patrick J. Adams explained during an interview on “Dinner’s on Me with Jesse Tyler Ferguson” that he decided to leave the show “Suits” for several reasons. He stated that by the end of the seventh season, his character had essentially reached its peak and there wasn’t much left to explore. With Meghan Markle already announcing her departure from the series, Adams realized that he was primarily staying due to financial incentives. He discussed this with his mother, who supported his decision. Additionally, Adams wanted to focus on his personal life, particularly his marriage to actress Troian Bellisario, whom he wed in 2016.
Toward the close of Season 7, Adams came to understand that he required attention for his own wellness. He confided in Ferguson, stating he felt “quite down,” and admitted, “I didn’t possess the skills to manage that sadness beyond spending excessively and drinking too much, without knowing how to articulate it.” He later disclosed that he gave up alcohol during the COVID-19 outbreak when he recognized its influence on his relationship and his absence as a father. “The most beneficial decision I believe I made for myself was to stop drinking. It simply had to occur in order for all these other positive changes to follow.
Does Mike return to Suits?
In the final season of “Suits,” Mike Ross makes his comeback in Season 9, specifically Episode 5 titled “If the Shoes Fit.” He confronts Harvey Specter in this episode to aid one of his clients in backing out of an athletic company contract. Unbeknownst to him, the firm’s previous client has now come under Samantha Wheeler’s (played by Katherine Heigl) management, who is determined to emerge victorious. This case stirs up difficult emotions between Mike and Harvey, but in the end, Louis Litt steps in to resolve the conflict through a heartfelt conversation with Mike.
In the final two episodes of the series, Mike makes a comeback. During Season 9, Episode 9 (“Thunder Away”), Harvey is seen seeking support from Mike following his mother’s demise. Donna Paulsen then tasks Mike with ousting Faye Richardson, the firm’s temporary managing partner, and he recruits Samantha to aid in this mission. They storm into Faye’s office, alleging that she is being sued due to Samantha’s dismissal from the firm. In response, Faye proposes that Harvey and Louis defend her, assuring them that she will depart the firm if they succeed in their case.
In Episode 10, titled “One Last Con”, Mike and Harvey find themselves in a situation where the lines are blurred rather than clear-cut. As a result, they decide to join forces one more time. They orchestrate an elaborate courtroom performance, while Faye attempts her own strategies. To further complicate matters, Mike and Harvey recruit their associates to stage a feigned altercation, diverting Faye’s attention. This distraction leads to an unintentional signing of a statement by Faye, implicating herself in the act of witness tampering. Ultimately, this sets the stage for her departure from the scene.
Will Mike be in the Suits spin-off?
As a die-hard fan, I’m thrilled about the fresh change of scenery in the “Suits” world with the upcoming spin-off, “Suits LA.” There’s a possibility that Mike Ross might grace our screens once more! This exciting chapter within the “Suits” universe brings “Arrowverse” veteran Stephen Amell into the fold as federal prosecutor Ted Black. Leaving New York behind, he moves to sunny Los Angeles and takes the helm at his firm, which seems to be facing challenges right from the start of the storyline. Can’t wait to delve deeper into the firm’s inner workings!
In a Q&A for Fox’s “Accused”, TVLine asked Patrick J. Adams about the possibility of Mike Ross appearing in the LA spin-off. He expressed his readiness to contribute, stating, “I’ve always been available.” He also shared his affection for the show and its creator, saying, “I admire Aaron Korsh and I cherish that universe; it significantly impacted my life.” Regarding Mike Ross’s current marital status with Rachel Zane, Adams thinks they are still a couple. “Of course they are, or at least I hope so… The intriguing aspect would be reuniting Mike with the storyline if we can manage it somehow. We’ll see how things work out between them – or if they work out,” he added.
Adams frequently takes on his familiar character again; he teamed up with Gabriel Macht for some T-Mobile advertisements in recent times. Additionally, Adams and his fellow actress Sarah Rafferty launched “Sidebar: A Suits Rewatch Podcast” back in September 2024. The spinoff of the popular show, “Suits LA,” premieres on NBC on February 23, 2025.
