Sullivan’s Crossing Season 3: Will Maggie and Cal Split?

In the third season of Sullivan’s Crossing, Maggie and Cal appear to be stronger than ever, but a significant issue remains unresolved between them that could lead to an imminent separation if not addressed soon. Over the past two seasons, this new couple has faced numerous challenges. For instance, Maggie had to come to terms with her past, which included being taken away from Sullivan’s Crossing and her father as a child, and rebuilding herself following a malpractice lawsuit. Additionally, there was the storyline of her realizing that Andrew was not the right match for her. This season, Maggie seems to have finally stopped avoiding her problems.

In the course of events, Cal has been grappling with intense trauma, having lost his wife Lynne to ALS a few years prior, which led him to abandon his law career and seek solace at Sullivan’s Crossing. The weight of Cal’s sorrow and Maggie’s emotional barriers delayed the development of their relationship. However, in ‘Sullivan’s Crossing’ season 3, it’s heartening to observe them no longer shying away from expressing their feelings; they are now fully committed to each other. Yet, this commitment doesn’t guarantee a trouble-free journey this season – quite the opposite, it may very well be a bumpy ride.

Cal Still Doesn’t Want Kids In Sullivan’s Crossing – But Maggie Does

Neither Of Them Has Changed Their Stance So Far

Before the occurrences depicted in season 3 of Sullivan’s Crossing airing on CW, Maggie experienced a miscarriage and is no longer carrying a child. Although the miscarriage itself was not shown on screen, its impact continues to affect Maggie deeply. Initially distancing herself from Cal during her sorrow, she has gradually begun to share her feelings of loss with him. Remarkably resilient, Cal has served as a source of emotional support for Maggie, allowing her room to grieve while simultaneously offering comfort. However, his past decision to never have children remains unaltered by these events.

Cal’s choice to never become a parent is deeply rooted in his past experiences. Despite being an upstanding individual, he finds himself contrasted with his own father who wasn’t as stable. The specter of his father’s schizophrenia, a condition known for its strong genetic link, has always cast a long shadow over him. He is reluctant to potentially inherit and pass on this condition to a child, even if adoption were an option. However, he recognizes the possibility that he might develop schizophrenia just like his father, albeit it typically appears later in life. To protect a child from the same fate he and his siblings endured, Cal declines to impose on a child what he considers as the suffering his father inflicted upon them.

At first, Maggie wasn’t entirely convinced that she was prepared for pregnancy, as her feelings were more about not wanting Andrew to be the father, a fact she struggled to acknowledge. However, once she made up her mind, she became excited at the thought of motherhood, resolving any lingering doubts she had regarding having children. Maggie is aware that Cal doesn’t want kids, yet she chose to be with him, and Cal understands that Maggie does desire children, but they still decided to be together. If one of them doesn’t alter their feelings, they aspire to different life paths despite their deep affection for each other, as they have fundamentally divergent desires.

Sullivan’s Crossing Season 3 Is Setting Up A Storyline That Will Either Cement Or Soften Cal’s Stance On Being A Father

Cal Has To Make Peace With His Father And His Past

In the first season of “Sullivan’s Crossing”, Maggie worked on mending her bond with her father, Sully. In the second season, Maggie experienced betrayal from her stepfather, Walter, which led her to a greater realization about why her mother, Phoebe, had acted as she did in the past when taking Maggie away from Sully. Now, it seems that Maggie’s relationship with her biological parents is (at least for now) stable, and the focus shifts to Cal, who must deal with his father’s transgressions and seek reconciliation with the past. This theme was foreshadowed in “Sullivan’s Crossing” season 3, episode 2, during search and rescue training, as memories of Cal’s childhood resurfaced. The revelation that his father is ill with cancer will undoubtedly disrupt Cal’s life and compel him to face issues he’d preferred to avoid.

Based on how his upcoming encounter with his father turns out, it may relieve Cal of the burden of his past traumas and spark a new consideration for becoming a father someday. Conversely, it might solidify his beliefs that parenthood is not a path he wishes to take. Given that this is Sullivan’s Crossing, it’s likely that the story will follow a more conventional pattern and have Cal reconsider his choice of remaining childless.

Regardless of when Cal might choose to pursue a relationship with Maggie, whether this current season or a possible future season 4 of “Sullivan’s Crossing”, it is clear that Cal has a significant amount of personal growth and healing to accomplish in order to lay his past demons to rest. The path for him and Maggie within the series might not be straightforward, given Maggie’s desire for another child.
