Despite the persistent fires that ravage areas near Los Angeles, the Sundance Film Festival is still scheduled to proceed in Park City.
In a statement published today, Amanda Kelso (CEO) and Eugene Hernandez (festival director) express, “Our community has a knack for uniting when determination and heart are vital, finding courage from the strong connections that make us robust. At this moment, we may feel sorrow, but we also understand the significance of pressing forward.”
Amanda Kelso and Eugene Hernandez wrote in a statement today that our community comes together during tough times by drawing strength from our close bonds, and right now, while we might be sad, it’s important for us to keep going.
Despite a week filled with cancellations of various industry events such as the Critics Choice Awards, the BAFTA Tea Party, and the nominations for the WGA, PGA, and SAG, it has been announced that the indie festival will carry on as originally scheduled.
The fires have significantly impacted the leadership at Sundance. Michelle Satter, a cherished founding senior director of artist programs at the Sundance Institute, unfortunately lost her home in Palisades. On social media, she expressed her sympathy for everyone who’s suffering loss during this challenging period in our city.
Approximately 60 square miles have been charred by the fires in Los Angeles, leading to the destruction or damage of around 12,000 structures. As many as 92,000 people were given evacuation orders by Monday morning. Regrettably, the fires have claimed 24 lives so far.

Dear Sundance Community,
Today, we’re reaching out regarding the persistent, devastating wildfires affecting Los Angeles. Above all else, our empathy goes out to everyone within our Sundance Institute family and those impacted by this heartbreaking situation. Rest assured, you’re not facing this alone; our thoughts are with you during these challenging times, not just in Southern California but beyond.
Over the last several days, we’ve held numerous discussions with artists, volunteers, media/press, trustees, donors, collaborators, and staff. The losses we see happening and that so many are enduring are difficult to comprehend and carry a profound emotional weight. However, as we proceed with our preparations for the 2025 Sundance Film Festival, which is less than 10 days away, we are inspired by the resilience displayed in the face of such tragic loss.

Recently, we’ve engaged in numerous talks with artists, volunteers, media/press, trustees, donors, partners, and staff. The losses we observe, as well as those many others are suffering, are challenging to grasp and evoke strong emotions. Despite this, as we progress with our arrangements for the 2025 Sundance Film Festival—less than a week away—we are touched by the strength demonstrated amidst the heartbreaking loss.
Dear members of Sundance, you’re integral pillars of our community, and it’s evident that numerous among you have been affected by the persistent fires. Historically, our community unites when determination and resolve are at a premium, finding fortitude in the strong connections that make us so adaptable.
As valued members of Sundance, we know many of you have been hit hard by the ongoing fires. Our community always stands united during challenging times, drawing strength from our deep bonds and being resilient.
Currently, it’s natural to feel sorrow, but we recognize the importance of moving forward. In no time, we’ll unite for Sundance’s 41st Film Festival to explore a fresh batch of films and filmmakers. Despite the difficulties that many are facing, we’re diligently preparing for this year’s event. In these trying times, our goal to champion artists, celebrate their work, and connect with communities is more crucial than ever. This journey may test us in numerous ways, but joining forces will also strengthen and motivate us as we envision the future. With that spirit, we cordially invite you to join us in the days leading up to the Festival. If you’ve been affected by the fires and feel ready or are in a place where you can, please share your experience in this form so we can grasp how our community has been touched.
As a movie enthusiast, I’m drawn to Sundance – a platform where talented artists thrive, their stories are celebrated, and the art of filmmaking is nurtured. I firmly believe that this shared experience has the power to heal and spark change within us as a community.
Please stay safe as you care for yourselves and each other.
Thinking of you,
Amanda Kelso, Acting CEO
Eugene Hernandez, Director, Sundance Film Festival & Public Programming
