Suniel Shetty recalls shocking experience of being held at gunpoint by US cops after 9/11: ‘They handcuffed me’

Suniel Shetty recently recounted an alarming event that happened to him in the U.S. following the September 11 attacks. At that time, Shetty was in Los Angeles for the filming of Kaante when the 9/11 disaster took place. In a recent conversation, Shetty spoke about how he was stopped at gunpoint by the police due to a mix-up caused by his physical appearance.

Suniel Shetty and his film team arrived in Los Angeles just before the September 11 attacks on the World Trade Center. While staying at a hotel, he saw the distressing footage of the Twin Towers being struck by planes for the first time. In an interview with The Indian Express, Shetty expressed disbelief, stating that it was almost too hard to accept what he was seeing.

The real surprise came a few days afterward when Shetty experienced an unpleasant incident with the police. In need of his hotel room keys, he asked for help at the lobby, only to forget them. When attempting a simple gesture for the keys, his action was misunderstood by another guest who then caused a scene. Not long after, the police arrived, their weapons at the ready.

In a tense situation, the officers believed Shetty could be dangerous and instructed him to get down on his knees while putting handcuffs on him, warning, “Lie down or we’ll fire.” During this moment, Shetty was utterly taken aback, unsure of what was unfolding. He stated, “I had no idea what was taking place. I was forced to kneel down. They put handcuffs on me.” It seemed that the specifics of his appearance, including his beard, singled him out in the heightened security climate following 9/11, and he explained that the confusion stemmed from how he looked at that time.

Luckily, some team members intervened, and one of the hotel managers – who happened to be from Pakistan – clarified that Shetty was a renowned actor. The incident became tense, but Shetty later described it as terrifying. Considering the hostile atmosphere following the attacks, he was uncertain about what would transpire next.

In summary, Shetty described the whole event as both frightening and dreamlike. He explained that the confusion originated from seemingly innocuous actions, yet it quickly transformed into a heated altercation, fueled by the fear and unpredictability of the situation.
