As a dedicated fan of satire and dark humor, I am genuinely disappointed to hear that HBO has decided to pull the plug on “The Franchise.” Having grown up in the golden age of superhero movies, it was refreshing to see a show that not only poked fun at the industry’s insatiable appetite for these franchises but also managed to do so with such wit and intelligence.
Being a frequent viewer of both “Veep” and “Succession,” I was particularly excited about this project, given its pedigree. The fact that it was created by Jon Brown, who has contributed significantly to both shows, only heightened my anticipation.
I can’t help but feel a tinge of regret that the series was ordered amid the 2023 Hollywood strikes and that production delays may have played a role in its cancellation. It would have been fascinating to see how “The Franchise” would have evolved beyond its pilot episode.
In the grand scheme of things, I understand HBO’s decision, as they must prioritize their resources wisely. However, in my humble opinion, the loss of this series is akin to a supervillain snatching away our beloved superhero movie franchise – a bitter pill to swallow for fans like me who appreciate biting satire and clever parody.
On a lighter note, perhaps “The Franchise” will find a new home where its unique blend of humor and industry critique can thrive. After all, it seems that even in the face of adversity, superheroes always manage to find a way to come back stronger than ever!
HBO has decided not to renew “The Franchise,” their show that satirized superhero film franchises, following its first season.
Beyond its theme critiquing the endless demand for superhero movies within the entertainment industry, particularly Marvel and DC, ‘The Franchise’ also boasted prominent figures in its production team. This includes Armando Iannucci, the creator of ‘Veep’, as well as Sam Mendes, director of ‘Skyfall’. Notably, ‘The Franchise’ was conceived by Jon Brown, who has worked on shows like ‘Veep’ and ‘Succession’.
It’s a pleasure to have collaborated with the exceptionally skilled team involved in The Franchise, including Sam Mendes, Jon Brown, Armando Iannucci, and that group of incredibly funny actors. Unfortunately, we won’t be pursuing another season, but we eagerly anticipate working with them again in the future,” stated a representative from HBO.
Or, if you prefer a more conversational tone:
“We’re truly thankful for having had the chance to work alongside the incredibly gifted team behind The Franchise, from Sam Mendes and Jon Brown to Armando Iannucci and that riotously funny cast. Sadly, we won’t be making another season, but we’re excited about potential future collaborations with them all,” said an HBO representative.
The production of the series commenced following the 2023 Hollywood strikes. Although the pilot episode was already finished by then, the initial filming had to wait until the strike was resolved to begin.
As a devoted fan, I found myself immersed in a captivating series that brought Himesh Patel and Aya Cash to life. This intriguing production offered an unprecedented glimpse into the making of a burgeoning superhero movie titled “Tecto: Eye of the Storm.” The show brilliantly satirized the superhero genre and Hollywood’s relentless pursuit of intellectual properties, serving as a refreshing critique of today’s entertainment landscape.
Deadline first reported on the cancelation.
