Superman

James Gunn’s version of Superman bleeds.

For Superman, who’s widely regarded as the strongest superhero in comics, it’s an astonishing spectacle.

Bloodied but unbowed.

On the weekends box office charts, the director’s “Superman” remake surpassed expectations by earning approximately $123 million in its first release. This figure outperformed the second-place contender, “Jurassic World Rebirth,” which made $40 million. Notably, this impressive debut places it among the top three highest U.S. box office openings of 2023.

The numbers don’t tell the whole story.

Revisiting the box office, “Superman” nearly mirrored the earnings of the 2013 blockbuster, “Man of Steel,” which showcased Henry Cavill as our beloved titular hero. In its opening weekend, “Man of Steel” raked in an impressive $116 million. However, it’s important to note that ticket prices were significantly lower back then compared to today’s rates.

  • 2013: $8.13
  • 2025: $16.08

Understand the issue at hand? It becomes even more intricate. Deadline uncovers that box office earnings from the 2010s failed to incorporate preview/early screenings. This implies that “Man of Steel” earned a greater sum than “Superman” – approximately $128.6 million, taking previews into account.

Now, look at the number of tickets sold:

Estimated tickets sold opening weekend:
MAN OF STEEL (14.3M)
SUPERMAN (10.7M)

Sometimes a win isn’t quite a win.

The international box office revenue from the movie seems less promising, especially considering China’s influence on the success of major films.

It seems we’re left in suspense for now. Will “Superman” have legs? Given the high audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes (93% fresh), it looks like the answer is likely to be yes.

Now, imagine what these numbers would be if Gunn hadn’t gotten political at the 11th hour.

The creator labeled the production as “politically themed” and commented that Superman embodies the essence of an immigrant. He didn’t specify whether it was legal or illegal immigration; this is typically how the contemporary Left handles such matters. Gunn, however, expressed his displeasure towards those who don’t share this perspective on the film.

In response to criticism about his perspective on Superman, Brother Sean Gunn strongly reinforced his stance, implying that individuals who hold differing opinions regarding this topic are not truly patriotic Americans.

The comments quickly went viral. Did that impact the film’s box office numbers?

Not according to the far-Left Deadline. Its proof?

Aren’t some analysts anticipating Superman to behave excessively following $22M previews and a projected opening of $140M-$150M? Could it be due to MAGA or the recent comments by Gunn about immigrants? I believe not, because rural areas typically perform well for this type of film, and they’re currently delivering an average amount of revenue for a PG-13 family adventure movie. More details on that soon.

Stop laughing.

“Superman” isn’t your typical “PG-13 family adventures” movie. And Deadline knows it.

In response, Deadline counters a Fox News guest’s query about whether Gunn’s remarks might affect domestic box office earnings, stating that they anticipate a weekend gross of around $140-$150 million within the U.S. instead.

The final numbers proved otherwise.

Without a doubt, Gunn’s “Superman” is hardly a failure, and it’s evident that the promotional efforts put behind it were effective. Similar to “Mission: Impossible – Fallout” and “F1” before it, the movie’s substantial budget necessitates a significant revenue at the box office.

Progress hasn’t been fully achieved just yet. Could it happen within a couple of weeks? That’s the possible stumbling block for the latest Superman character, and, by implication, the entire film industry as well.
