James Gunn’s Superman movie revitalized the Steel Man’s cinematic universe, laying the foundation for numerous upcoming stories. For instance, potential sequels might delve into Lex Luthor’s destiny, the inception of the Justice League, and Jimmy Olsen’s romance with his toe-mutated girlfriend. However, many viewers overlooked that Ultraman’s ultimate demise subtly hints at a future film pitting Superman against an evil incarnation of the Justice League.
In the universe of DC Comics, Ultraman is a wicked counterpart of Superman from another dimension. Originated on Earth-3, this planet flips the norm as its heroes are villains and vice versa. After Ultraman perished during the occurrences of “Crisis on Infinite Earths”, writer Grant Morrison revamped the character and his Crime Syndicate, a malevolent equivalent of the Justice League (including sinister versions of Batman and The Flash), in the graphic novel “JLA: Earth 2”. Since then, the character has undergone multiple reboots; however, Morrison’s version remains the most recognized.
Ultraman’s Jump From Comic To Movie
How does this connect to James Gunn’s Superman film? In the movie, it’s revealed that the character who can match strength with Superman is initially presented as the “Hammer of Borovia.
Eventually, it becomes clear that Ultraman is actually an imperfect genetic clone of David Corenswet’s Superman, crafted by Lex Luthor. This new character differs significantly from the comic book version of Ultraman since he was genetically cloned instead of being a duplicate from a parallel universe.
Nevertheless, Gunn skillfully lays the groundwork for a potential “Earth 2” Ultraman film with Superman’s final destiny. When it became clear that brute force wouldn’t permanently defeat his clone, Superman made sure that his powerful adversary was hurled into a black hole. Consequently, spectators were left with the impression that they would never witness Ultraman on the big screen again.
As a movie enthusiast, it’s fascinating to point out that this on-screen ‘black hole’ doesn’t quite mimic the behavior of real-world black holes. For instance, Superman can break free from its grasp with his super breath, which seems unusual considering the natural laws we know about black holes. This could be due to the fact that this black hole is artificially crafted by Lex Luthor.
However, what if this manufactured ‘black hole’ turns out to be a ‘white hole,’ one capable of transporting Ultraman to another dimension? That’s a plot twist I wouldn’t mind seeing unfold!
In this scenario, having Ultraman arrive on a planet that already has its own corrupt version of the Justice League provides James Gunn or future DCU directors an opportunity to develop a movie. This alien character, Ultraman, boasting immense powers, could swiftly take charge due to his abilities. He carries a deep grudge against Superman and all his comrades, harboring a thirst for revenge in this new cosmos.
In the comic series “Earth 2” by Morrison, the alternate version of Lex Luthor is portrayed as a hero who travels from his world to Earth 1 seeking aid from the Justice League. If this plot were used in a future film, it would be an excellent chance for Nicholas Hoult to play a character as virtuous as the original Lex was villainous. Primarily, it would set the stage for an exciting confrontation between Superman’s Justice League (expected to be fully established in a few years) and Ultraman’s Criminal Syndicate.
To put it another way, it would certainly be a lot more fun to watch than the classic scenario of Big Blue battling against everyone’s beloved interdimensional sprite.
The Greatest Comic Movie Ever?
Given a skilled approach, this film could provide some of the most spectacular on-screen fight sequences that Hollywood has yet to offer.
Revisit the thrilling moment in “Captain America: Civil War” where two groups of extraordinary characters clashed? In a hypothetical villainous Justice League film, audiences would delight in watching an entire league of the planet’s mightiest protectors battling against a band of equally powerful supervillains.
It’s clear that top-notch fights alone don’t make a fantastic film. However, Gunn has demonstrated an ability to blend action scenes with well-developed characters and immersive world-building that resonates with fans. If he or another skilled director were to work on an “Earth 2” movie, it could potentially match the DCU’s equivalent to the MCU’s iconic “Avengers: Endgame”.
Additionally, showcasing the use of the multiverse beyond mere cameos could make an antagonistic Justice League movie an effective counterpart to Marvel’s dominance.
A malevolent Justice League film could cater to both new viewers and dedicated comic book enthusiasts. However, whether the DC Universe proves popular enough for a sequel of this scale remains to be seen.
