Superman And Lois Pulled Back The Curtain On Lex Luthor’s Relationship With His Daughter, But It’s The Doomsday Twist That’s The Real Game-Changer

As a dedicated fan of Superman & Lois, I must say that this latest episode, “Break the Cycle”, has truly been a rollercoaster ride! The reunion between Lex Luthor and his daughter Elizabeth was heart-wrenching, especially given their complex history and the long-standing tension between them.

Warning: SPOILERS for the Superman & Lois episode “Break the Cycle” are ahead!

As a dedicated gamer, I’ve found myself deeply immersed in the world of Superman & Lois, where my character, Lex Luthor, has two primary objectives. First, I’m hell-bent on inflicting retribution upon the Kent family, an act that culminated in Doomsday taking down Superman in the Season 4 opener. Second, I’ve been tirelessly pursuing the whereabouts of my daughter, Elizabeth – a secret that General Lane sacrificed his life to keep hidden.

Tonight marked the midpoint of the final season for “Superman & Lois,” and a significant event took place: Lex Luthor reconnected with Elizabeth, portrayed as an adult by actress Elizabeth Henstridge from “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” Notably, Henstridge has also directed several episodes for the DC series. The development of their relationship was intriguing, but it was the unexpected Doomsday twist at the end of “Break the Cycle” that truly shook things up.

How Lex Luthor’s Reunion With Elizabeth Went Down

In Season 3 of Superman & Lois, it became clear that Bruno and Peia Mannheim falsely accused Lex Luthor of killing Boss Moxie, a charge which eventually led to his release from prison after serving 17 years. However, while in prison, Luthor’s relationship with Elizabeth deteriorated, as she stopped communicating with him. Despite this, he managed to stay informed about her through private investigators, such as discovering that she had excelled in medical school. Eventually, Elizabeth went into hiding, causing great anger in Luthor because she is the only person in his life whom he still cares for deeply.

In her exploration of her father’s old Defense Department documents, Lois Lane stumbled upon a witness protection document indicating that Elizabeth Luthor resided in an Italian village. Driven by a need to halt Lex Luthor’s attacks on her family, Lois managed to persuade a hesitant Elizabeth, who was close to six months pregnant, to meet with her father at Victoria May’s Diner in Smallville. After some time, Elizabeth departed due to her father’s unwillingness to acknowledge his mistakes, but Clark Kent convinced her to come back to the diner and continue the conversation.

In their conversation, scenes from 17 years prior were interspersed, showing when Elizabeth’s mother was divorcing Lex and attempting to relocate her, who was then 14 years old. However, Lex managed to persuade Elizabeth to remain in the U.S., emphasizing that she was a vital part of his life. But one fateful morning, following dropping off Elizabeth at school, Lex was arrested by Superman for the murder of Boss Moxie, and since then, he hasn’t seen his daughter until the current narrative of “Break the Cycle.

Unfortunately, it seemed as though Lex and Elizabeth might reconcile, but when she found out Lex was determined to continue seeking revenge against Lois Lane for stealing 17 years of his life, she urged him to let it go. However, he refused, leading Elizabeth to ask Lex to permanently stay away from her life and departed. With his manipulative nature, Lex is likely to blame Lois for this turn of events and intensify his attempts to make her and her family’s lives miserable. This, however, may prove more challenging for him due to the significant twist in this episode.

Why Doomsday Is No Longer A Threat… For Now

During Elizabeth’s encounter with Lex Luthor, Lois Lane recalled that her father’s collection of papers included an ELT – a device used to summon Superman in case of emergency. Recalling Doomsday’s reaction to the device’s signal and how this unstoppable creature was once the antithesis of Superman, she had an outlandish thought: attempt to reason with Doomsday since there might still be traces of her husband from another universe within it. This idea came after Clark journeyed to the Fortress of Solitude and re-lived his battle with Doomsday in his mind, only to find that it had no weakness. To make matters worse, he was already grappling with reduced powers, a world aware that Superman is alive again, and other challenges.

At an abandoned underpass, Lois executed her strategy, but she was taken aback when Jonathan soared towards her upon hearing his grandfather’s emergency beacon activate. Suddenly, Doomsday appeared, threatening to demolish them both. However, Lois managed to jog the behemoth’s memory from a past life, persuading him not to annihilate her family. As if on cue, Doomsday retreated without causing harm to Lois or Jonathan. It was clear that Lex Luthor was infuriated when he reviewed the security footage provided by Amanda McCoy, revealing that Doomsday had left his subway hideout and didn’t come back.

Similar to Elizabeth’s situation, Doomsday might reappear on Superman & Lois. Leaving Doomsday at large is almost like keeping a loaded gun hidden away in this series. However, if Lois Lane’s emotional plea was effective, it seems we may not have to worry about another battle between Doomsday and Superman… or at least, not one with Doomsday fully aware. If Lex Luthor manages to locate the creature, it wouldn’t surprise me if he finds a way to control its mind again, making it his tool once more.
