As a seasoned gamer of the DC Universe, I can say with certainty that the anticipation for the final episodes of Superman & Lois is at an all-time high. With Lex Luthor‘s character development reaching new heights and the Doomsday twist leaving us on the edge of our seats, it’s time for a showdown we’ve been waiting for: Superman versus Lex Luthor.
Warning: SPOILERS for the first five episodes of Superman & Lois Season 4 are ahead!
After the highly anticipated debut of “Break the Cycle” on this week’s 2024 TV lineup, revealing an intriguing angle into Lex Luthor’s bond with his daughter and culminating in a shocking Doomsday turn of events, we are now midway through Season 4 of Superman & Lois. With only five episodes remaining until not just the season ends, but the entire DC TV series draws to a close after four seasons. As we approach these final weeks, I’m eagerly anticipating one significant Luthor scene: a confrontation between him and Superman before the show wraps up.
To this point, Michael Cudlitz’s character portrayal has showcased remarkable intelligence and cunning, as evidenced by instances such as manipulating Bruno Mannheim’s serum to turn Inverse Superman into Doomsday, and discerning that Jordan was Superboy which he subsequently used to unsettle him. Prior to “Break the Cycle,” Luthor had no need to engage in dirty work personally. Instead, Doomsday functioned as his chief enforcer, causing temporary death to Superman and permanent demise of Sam Lane.
Currently, Lex Luthor no longer possesses Doomsday as his weapon. In the finale of “Break the Cycle,” it was revealed that Lois Lane managed to remind Doomsday of his past life as a Superman from another world and convinced him to cease targeting her family. This angered Luthor, but it’s possible he may try to locate Doomsday again in an attempt to control him once more. However, for now, it seems Doomsday is living independently. While Lex has numerous common thugs armed with advanced tech at his disposal, I believe the series Superman & Lois should culminate with him being compelled to confront Superman head-on rather than relying on proxies.
Now, there are a few ways this could be pulled off. One is that Lex Luthor could simply utilize the aforementioned technology along with some Kryptonite weapons, but that’s kind of boring. I’d much rather see Luthor don the same kind of armor he has in the comics, which boosts his strength and durability and lets him fly and shoot energy blasts, among other capabilities. Jon Cryer’s Luthor got his own battlesuit for Supergirl, so why can’t Cudlitz’s incarnation follow… well, suit (I regret nothing).
Hey there fellow gaming enthusiast! While I’m all for the thrilling action of Superman & Lois, we gotta keep it real – this season was made on a shoestring budget compared to the past ones. With the usual special effects required and the hefty cost of bringing Doomsday to life, there might not have been enough cash left in the kitty to show off Lex Luthor’s armor. So here’s an idea: how about we skip the high-tech battles for now and let Superman and Luthor settle their differences with a classic, raw fistfight? No powers needed!
Ever since Clark Kent received Sam Lane’s heart and came back to life, his superpowers have been on a decline. He struggles with hearing clearly, finding it tough to fly long distances, and even gets drunk easily now. It seems quite plausible that by the end of the series Superman & Lois, all his powers might disappear entirely. In such a case, one can imagine a situation where Superman and Lex Luthor are in the same room, and Superman would have to defeat Luthor with just human strength. I’m still hoping for the battlesuit solution, but I believe the writers could create an engaging hand-to-hand combat scene even without it.
We’ll see if my wish comes through when the last episodes of Superman & Lois air every Monday at 8 PM ET on The CW. If you can’t catch it live, stream the past three seasons with a Max subscription or check out the upcoming DC TV shows.
