As a fan who has grown up with the tales of Superman and Lois Lane, I must say that the series finale of “Superman & Lois” was nothing short of heart-wrenching. The epilogue, particularly, left me in tears as it depicted Lois’ tragic end due to breast cancer. In an interview after the finale, Elizabeth Tulloch shared her wish for Dylan Walsh, who played Lois’ father Sam Lane, to be present during that poignant scene.
Warning: SPOILERS for the Superman & Lois series finale are ahead!
The series finale of “Superman & Lois” wrapped up each character beautifully, but the emotional epilogue was particularly touching. After Lex Luthor’s defeat and a one-year time jump, the closing segment titled “It Went By So Fast” showed the rest of Clark Kent and Lois Lane’s lives, including her death from breast cancer many years later with her husband and sons by her side. This scene was already heartbreaking, but actress Elizabeth Tulloch shared in a post-episode interview that there could have been an even more emotional twist for her character.
During a conversation with EW together with co-star Tyler Hoechlin, Tulloch expressed her desire for Dylan Walsh, who portrays Lois’ father, Sam Lane, to have been there for the filming of the emotional death scene. Simply put, she wished Walsh could have been present.
In Lois’ last moments, what I truly wished for was Dylan Walsh’s presence, even if it was in a virtual or spectral form. As I filmed, I couldn’t help but think, ‘If only Dylan were here.’ It would have been fitting – she called out, ‘Daddy.’ If only we could bring him in just to respond with his endearing nickname for Lois, ‘Pumpkin.’ However, due to budget limitations, that wasn’t possible. Despite this one disappointment, I’m incredibly proud of the work our writers, producers, cast, and crew managed to accomplish under such constraints.
Sam Lane, a character integral since the start of Superman & Lois, played dual roles – family member and Head of Defense Department. However, due to significant budget reductions in Season 4, Dylan Walsh was one of the actors reduced from the main cast, appearing only in two episodes this season. In his last appearance, Sam met a tragic end at the hands of Doomsday. But before his demise, he had administered himself a serum developed by Bruno Mannheim, which contained Superman’s blood. This serum allowed Sam’s heart to be transplanted into his son-in-law’s body. The Kryptonian technology within the Fortress of Solitude then utilized this heart to revive Clark Kent.
In a different phrasing, here’s how it could be rewritten: Elizabeth Tulloch’s portrayal of Lois Lane had a poignant moment when she saw her father before she passed away. However, since Tulloch mentioned that having Dylan Walsh actually appear in the scene would have added more impact, I find myself imagining an expanded version of that scene and feeling the emotions resurface. Frankly, I was taken aback that Sam Lane, Lois’s father, wasn’t among the characters present when Clark Kent entered the afterlife to be reunited with his loved ones. As Tulloch suggested, budget constraints prevented Walsh from traveling to Vancouver for a brief appearance in that scene. Nevertheless, there was still a reference to Sam Lane before the story concluded.
At present, you can only watch the first three seasons of Superman & Lois with a Max subscription, however, expect season 4 to join them shortly. With the series having concluded, discover what’s ahead by exploring the lineup of upcoming DC television series.
