'Superman & Lois' Finale Gets Emotional Fan Reactions to CW's DC Era

As a long-time fan who has witnessed the evolution of DC Comics on The CW, I must say that the finale of Superman & Lois was nothing short of a bittersweet farewell to an era. For years, the network’s DC shows have been a significant part of my life, shaping my love for superhero stories and providing countless hours of entertainment.

Supporters of “Superman & Lois” felt a deep sorrow as the beloved DC Comics series wrapped up its four-season journey on The CW last night. The finale wasn’t just an ending for the series, but also marked the end of the last DC show on the network, symbolizing the conclusion of a significant era for the once powerful brand on The CW. Due to a recent acquisition, the network has shifted its focus away from scripted programming, yet “Superman & Lois” concluded in a thoughtful and satisfying manner. Many fans expressed their appreciation for the show on social media.

Taking a look at X since the series finale has revealed that Superman & Lois has managed to preserve what made it exceptional ever since its debut in 2021. The show has consistently been applauded for its realistic portrayal of its characters, while offering comic book enthusiasts a novel take on a superhero genre that has progressively become more congested throughout the years. User @Truth31The stated, “SUPERMAN & LOIS will be remembered as one of the finest Superman series/media ever created. The cast and crew deserve all the accolades in the world for delivering an emotional conclusion. Thank you for the memories. It felt like it went by so quickly.” User @mikalbridge shared a similar sentiment, saying, “The finale made me shed tears. This is the best comic book show ever, the best Superman yet, and the best Lois Lane ever. I’ll miss this series so much.

18 years ago, the TV series Smallville shifted to The CW, marking the beginning of the network’s collaboration with DC Comics for television shows. This paved the way for the famous Arrowverse, which has been a dominant force on The CW with shows like Arrow, The Flash, Legends of Tomorrow, and Supergirl. User @superflashwest commented, “18 years ago, Smallville moved to the CW. And tonight, the CW’s DC TV Universe concludes with Superman & Lois. This universe has had a tremendous impact on my life and played a significant role in shaping who I am. I feel a mix of emotions today.” User @AustinPlanet commended the series for its remarkable adaptation of comics given the limited budget of The CW, stating, “#SupermanAndLois is one of the greatest comic book adaptations ever made. The show’s ability to excel on a CW budget is simply incredible. At times, it looked better than some movies, and Tyler Hoechlin was an outstanding Superman. I’ll miss watching him.

‘Superman & Lois’ Quickly Forged its Own Path

Initially intended as part of Earth-Prime within the Arrowverse during its first season, Superman & Lois originated as a spin-off from Supergirl, featuring Tyler Hoechlin and Elizabeth Tulloch reprising their lead roles. However, due to unforeseen circumstances, planned crossovers with Batwoman and Supergirl were scrapped because of the pandemic, causing the series to establish its own distinct identity separate from the original plan. Showrunner Todd Helbing opted to create a unique continuity for the show, which ultimately resulted in a well-liked series identity by both critics and fans.

In January 2023, James Gunn and Peter Safran, who became co-CEOs at DC Studios, mentioned that Superman & Lois might run for “one or two more seasons,” suggesting that the series could be nearing its end. This assumption was supported when Brad Schwartz, President of Entertainment at The CW, stated that the production model of the show no longer fit with the new direction of the network because it was too costly to produce and didn’t bring direct profits for the company since The CW did not own the rights to the earlier seasons.

To guarantee another season, the show needed to decrease its permanent cast members and scriptwriters, along with reducing the number of intense action sequences. The series was indeed renewed for a final season in November 2023, however, production faced delays due to simultaneous WGA (Writers Guild of America) and SAG (Screen Actors Guild) strikes. Despite the constraints of its fourth and last season, the program evolved into a more cohesive family-oriented show, capitalizing on its strengths as a character-driven drama.

Throughout its four distinct seasons, the series Superman & Lois garnered positive responses from critics, boasting an impressive 83% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Simultaneously, it was a dependable hit in terms of ratings. Though viewership numbers dropped slightly with each season, the show found new audiences through the Max streaming service and The CW app.

The television series, “Superman & Lois,” created by Helbing and Berlanti, starts with Clark Kent/Superman, portrayed by Hoechlin, and Lois Lane, played by Tulloch, back in Smallville alongside their sons Jonathan (Jordan Elsass for Seasons 1-2, Michael Bishop for Seasons 3-4) and Jordan (Alex Garfin). Their lives appear peaceful after reuniting with Lana Lang (Chirui) and her husband Kyle Cushing (Valdez), but this tranquility is disrupted by adversaries that compel Clark to once again embody the symbol of hope as Superman.
