As a long-time comic book enthusiast who grew up with Superman comics and the iconic small-screen adaptation of Superman & Lois, I must say that this news leaves me both excited and saddened. On one hand, the prospect of Darkseid making an appearance on The CW is nothing short of thrilling, especially considering how well the creators have handled other villains in the series. However, as someone who has seen Superman die countless times in various comics, the thought of saying goodbye to Tyler Hoechlin’s portrayal of the Man of Steel is bittersweet.
In the final and concluding season of “Superman & Lois,” both Lex Luthor and Doomsday were featured, yet this critically acclaimed series aimed for even greater ambitions in upcoming episodes. Featuring Tyler Hoechlin and Elizabeth Tulloch as the main characters, the show was warmly received because of its dedication to a small-town narrative and faithful representation of the original comics. Throughout the series, numerous famous villains have appeared on screen, but the minds behind “Superman & Lois” intended to introduce The CW’s audience to the ultimate DC Comics antagonist.
In a conversation with Deadline, Todd Helbing, who jointly runs ‘Superman & Lois’, expressed a strong desire to present a compelling argument to DC for incorporating the character Darkseid into their series. While Lex Luthor and Doomsday served as the primary antagonists in Season 3, culminating with Doomsday killing Superman during the premiere, Helbing suggested that bringing Darkseid onto the scene would have been an ambitious move for the showrunners, should they have had the opportunity to continue into Season 4. Alas, it’s uncertain if this idea would have been accepted, but it’s worth noting that Darkseid has made appearances on The CW in the past.
Instead of concluding the series as we introduce a new adversary, it would have been intriguing to delve deeper into Brainiac’s character and develop the storyline further. We were planning to put forth a compelling argument to DC to incorporate Darkseid in some way, even though I’m not certain if they would have agreed. If they did, we aimed to create something extraordinary with that character – it was an exciting prospect! However, it’s difficult to say now, but having Darkseid involved would undoubtedly have been my top pick for an engaging storyline.
It might surprise you to know that the villainous character Darkseid made his live-action debut on The CW’s initial superhero series, “Smallville”, before garnering more screen time in Zack Snyder’s Justice League. Despite its limited budget and somewhat outdated visual effects, this appearance was a significant milestone for dedicated DC Comics fans. Given how accurately “Superman & Lois” has portrayed other characters, it seems they had an even better chance to bring Darkseid to life convincingly in live-action.
How ‘Superman & Lois’ Pulls Off the Impossible
As a dedicated cinema enthusiast, I must say that the final chapter of “Superman & Lois” surpassed even my wildest imaginations. What made it truly exceptional was their daring decision – to take the life of Superman himself. Following his battle with Doomsday, a human heart, older than his own prime, replaced his. In time, this man of steel succumbed to natural causes and passed away, just as his father did before him, stricken by a heart attack. In the very same interview, Helbing spoke about defying expectations and portraying Superman aging and meeting his end.
In the lore of Superman, he is essentially immortal, destined to live forever. However, in this adaptation, due to certain events, he was no longer going to be eternal. This shift away from his traditional longevity seemed to prompt a different narrative angle, one that might provoke curiosity about what his old age would have been like. Instead, the creators opted to depict it, offering a unique and poignant ending that catches us off guard. These kinds of unexpected conclusions are often the most powerful.
The fate of Superman in live-action is now under the control of James Gunn, who’s reshaping the DC cinematic universe through his upcoming ‘Man of Steel’ film. Given that the series Superman & Lois is ending due to its clash with the DCU, the new take on Superman has some big shoes to fill following the success of the beloved CW show. It’s quite unusual to have a conclusion as fulfilling as this one, considering it involves the demise of its central superhero character.
