As a long-time Superman fan who has seen every actor take on the Man of Steel, I must say that David Corenswet‘s transformation for his upcoming role has left me utterly impressed! The sheer dedication to bulk up to 238lbs is something only a few Hollywood actors would dare to do.
David Corenswet, star of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, is metamorphosing into a real-life Man of Steel for his upcoming role in James Gunn’s Superman, showcasing the fruits of his superhero training regimen. This talented actor is stepping into the cape and boots previously worn by Henry Cavill as the latest Superman in the DC Universe. Cavill’s portrayal of the character in Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel and subsequent DCEU movies set a new standard for the character’s physicality. While Christopher Reeve and Brandon Routh’s portrayals gave Superman a muscular and athletic physique, Cavill elevated this transformation to unprecedented levels. With fans questioning if any actor could match what Cavill accomplished, David Corenswet might have successfully surpassed expectations.
On the Manly Things (similar to) Podcast, Corenswet recently appeared for his first complete public engagement to endorse his character in Superman. The actor shared details about his intense physical transformation for the part, effectively quelling any doubters by admitting that he’s long been eager to build muscle for a superhero role.
Corenswet stated that building muscle mass, similar to what Superman might have, was a good reason for him to gain some extra pounds.
Initially, some workout images featuring Corenswet and his coach, Paolo Mascitti, were shared during the film’s editing phase. However, the actor recently disclosed that he achieved an impressive physique specifically for this acting role. In simpler terms,
Initially, I believed that weighing 210 pounds would bring me joy, but as I reached 238 pounds, I realized it wasn’t the happiness I expected. You should know that 238 was my heaviest point, not where we began filming. Gaining weight so rapidly left my body struggling to adapt to the additional mass… However, that was at the pinnacle of my muscle-building phase, and over time, I managed to shed some pounds before we commenced shooting. At the start of our shoot, I weighed around 228 pounds. When I put on one of those oversized sweatshirts, I felt proud – it seemed like I was filling it out perfectly. Unfortunately, none of my pants could accommodate me anymore.
What David Corenswet’s Transformation Means for Superman
Anyone who has visited a gym can attest to the remarkable change that happens when someone goes from 190lbs to 238lbs in a short span of time, even for a well-known Hollywood actor with access to expensive equipment and personal trainers. However, this significant physique transformation raises questions about how it will affect Corenswet’s performance as Superman in James Gunn’s upcoming movie.
In terms of his actual acting, undergoing such a drastic change would undoubtedly aid Corenswet in portraying the physical aspects required to play Superman. Gaining so much power and muscle will boost his self-assurance. For Corenswet, this increased confidence mirrors Superman’s confidence in being virtually indestructible compared to others. Of course, the physical transformation is just one aspect of Corenswet’s preparation; however, it plays a significant role in helping him embody the character and potentially become an exceptional Superman.
