Superman Star Nathan Fillion Tells Us What’s Next For The Justice Gang, And I Really Hope This Happens

Heads up, fellow movie enthusiasts! I’ve got a tidbit to share about Superman, but beware, there might be some minor spoilers ahead. If you haven’t caught the movie yet, tread carefully! Enjoy the ride if you decide to continue.

Over the past few months, DC Universe has experienced a surge of excitement – initially with the animated series “Creature Commandos” on television, followed by the live-action “Superman” on the big screen. This rejuvenation phase, or what some might call a “blue sky moment,” seems to be in full swing. Notably, there’s no defined “house style” being developed under DC Studios co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran. The upcoming slate of DC movies, featuring titles like “Supergirl: Woman Of Tomorrow,” “Clayface,” and a second season of “Peacemaker,” suggests an openness to a wide range of ideas for the DC canon.

Nathan Fillion, known for his role as Superman, recently proposed an intriguing idea during a press day for the upcoming 2025 blockbuster – a detective mystery for the Justice Gang. This is something I’d be thrilled to witness unfold. During their conversation with TopMob’s Jeff McCobb, Fillion along with Isabela Merced, Anthony Carrigan, and Edi Gathegi (who plays Guy Gardner aka Green Lantern) were asked about what they’d like to see next for their superhero team. While Gathegi and Merced left the creative decisions to James Gunn, Fillion offered a precise suggestion – a detective mystery for the Justice League.

In this movie, it’d be intriguing if the Justice Team faced not just colossal, physical perils, but also puzzling mysteries that require investigation and street-smart sleuthing.

In the comic book series Superman, the Justice League finds itself in a challenging situation as they face not one, but two major dangers. As pointed out by Nathan Fillion, these threats are particularly severe. The first menace is a colossal monster wreaking havoc on the streets of Metropolis. The second involves an invasion by the Boravians in Jarhanpur, which calls for the heroes to dismantle an entire country’s military forces. Green Lantern, Hawkgirl, Mr. Terrific, and the newly added Metamorpho display remarkable teamwork in their battles, but it would be intriguing to witness them employing a less action-packed, more investigative approach, given that they have already shown their prowess in large-scale conflicts.

As a film critic, I wholeheartedly jumped on board with my fellow actors’ notion. Drawing inspiration from Rian Johnson’s exceptional work over the past few years, I proposed we infuse our project with his unique storytelling style and captivating cinematic flair.

I love a mystery. Like a Knives Out kind of ensemble mystery.

Expanding on the thought: I am aware that Nathan Fillion expresses enthusiasm about the possibility of the DC Universe introducing a Batman (with the aim of including the comic book scene where the Dark Knight knocks out Guy Gardner), but he is not the detective I would choose to lead the investigation in a Justice League-centric mystery. Rather than focusing on the World’s Greatest Detective, I would prefer to witness the debut of the first live-action version of the enigmatic sleuth known as The Question, who is part of an intriguing and eccentric team.

It remains to be seen if this concept will sprout and flourish into something substantial within the DC Universe; however, we can look forward to all the exciting offerings that are coming up next year, such as Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters, and delight in both the series Creature Commandos, accessible with an HBO Max subscription, and the movie Superman currently playing in cinemas nationwide.
