‘Superman’ Star Skyler Gisondo Thought He Was Auditioning for Clark Kent: “Would Have Been a Bad Casting Choice”

On Monday, Superman made his landing in Los Angeles. If David Corenswet hadn’t taken on the role of Clark Kent, one can imagine how Skyler Gisondo might have portrayed the superhero instead.

More casually: The actor who portrays Jimmy Olsen in the DC movie confessed that at first, when he learned about the project, he mistakenly believed he was trying out for Superman. It wasn’t until after he submitted a video audition that he discovered he was being considered for the part of Jimmy Olsen instead.

During the Los Angeles premiere, Gisondo playfully told The Hollywood Reporter that in hindsight, Corenswet was the perfect choice for the role. He added, “I’m glad he won this award; he truly deserved it. To be honest, I had planned to bulk up and get really muscular, but when I saw David, who hadn’t made much progress yet, I decided not to outshine him. So, I toned down my efforts and let him take the spotlight.

Gisondo jokingly admitted that when he believed he was being considered for the main role, he thought it wouldn’t be a good fit. He submitted his audition tape thinking, “James Gunn always thinks outside the box, I probably wouldn’t be his first choice,” but he genuinely felt David was perfect for the part. He’s thrilled for everyone to witness David in this film. In just a few moments of meeting him, you instantly think, “This is Superman.

In the latest development, Corenswet teams up with Rachel Brosnahan portraying Lois Lane, while Nicholas Hoult steps into the shoes of Lex Luthor. The ensemble also features Anthony Carrigan, Nathan Fillion, Beck Bennett, and Wendell Pierce in supporting roles.

As a passionate gamer and storyteller, I’ve embarked on the journey of crafting the initial chapter in my and Peter Safran’s fresh take on the DC Universe. At the grand unveiling, I shared that I aimed to portray Superman in an authentic manner. I wanted to feel invested in Superman, so I chose to present him within this expansive DC cosmos, a vibrant realm reminiscent of comic book pages, where we dive into the universe as I did when I was just a kid – with Superman, alongside superpowered allies, colossal robots, Kaiju, and more. Yet, I also wanted to delve deeper, revealing his true nature – understanding his personality, who he is, his bond with Lois, his ideals, his virtues, his pitfalls.

Superman hits theaters on Friday.
