The competition between superhero blockbusters makes a comeback this year, with a clear favorite emerging in the ongoing DC vs Marvel cinematic showdown set to dominate screens in July. With both studios largely taking a break in 2024, Marvel Studios and DC Studios aim to breathe new life into their established properties this year. The two highly anticipated movies are scheduled for release within weeks of each other, and the initial trailers hint that one may outperform its rival at the box office.
2025 looks set to be an exciting year for Marvel Studios as they kick things off with “Captain America: A New World” and “Thunderbolts”, set to hit screens in early 2025. However, all eyes are already on the upcoming releases of “Superman” on July 2 and “Fantastic Four” on July 25. Interestingly, the first trailer for “Fantastic Four” was unveiled this week, allowing a side-by-side comparison with the previously released “Superman” trailer.
As a fervent admirer, I can’t help but share my excitement about the recent development! The initial teaser for Superman dropped last December, and let me tell you, the anticipation was palpable, especially with David Corenswet stepping into the iconic red trunks. It came as no surprise that the film shattered Warner Bros. Discovery’s record for trailer debut viewings, amassing a staggering 24 million views within just 24 hours! For perspective, the latest Fantastic Four teaser managed to garner 21 million views in the same timeframe, hinting that the forthcoming DCU live-action premiere has a slight edge in capturing the curiosity of fans.
Who Will Win the Box Office This Summer?
This upcoming summer season boasts numerous blockbuster films arriving rapidly. In addition to “Jurassic World Dominion” and “How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World,” it’s still uncertain which of these movies will dominate financially at the box office, as recent releases have made it challenging to predict success. Initial estimates indicate that “Superman” has a hefty budget exceeding $300 million, although director James Gunn repeatedly refutes this claim. It’s safe to assume that the film carries an expense of more than $200 million. The production cost for “The Fantastic Four: First Footsteps” remains unconfirmed, but it’s likely that it will be in a similar price range.
No Way Home in 2021, and DC’s most recent billion-dollar earner, one of only four such films in their history, was Aquaman in 2018. With both comic book franchises having faced challenges in 2023, the key to their success will primarily lie in setting the stage for something bigger or more extensive.
In the realm of James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Universe, Superman marks the first live-action film. Back in 2013, Henry Cavill’s introduction as Superman grossed an impressive $668 million globally, but the movie received mixed reviews due to Zack Snyder’s contentious filmmaking approach. Unlike the previous film, which was not initially perceived as the beginning of a new universe, Gunn’s rendition is eagerly anticipated by those yearning for insights into what they can expect from the fresh start in the DCU.
The Fantastic Four: Initial Leaps”
This title is the inaugural film of Phase 6 in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, marking the climax of the Multiverse Saga. It’s advisable to disregard the financial success of the 2015 adaptation of “Fantastic Four,” as its box office earnings ($168 million from a $120 million budget) were less than impressive. In contrast, this new version presents a distinct take on the story. It forgoes the previous grim interpretation and origin tale in favor of a more comic-book accurate narrative that plunges viewers directly into the action. Given its role in introducing Galactus to the series and potentially setting off a chain of events leading to “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Avengers: Secret Wars,” this rendition of Marvel’s original team promises an exciting journey.
