Superman’s Female Cast: Prepare to Be Amazed

As a lifelong fan of Superman, I’m thrilled about James Gunn’s upcoming debut of Superman in the 2025 movie lineup, which is just around the corner. Although I’ve found Superman’s previous cinematic outings to be somewhat hit-or-miss for me, David Corenswet’s interpretation promises something exceptional for several reasons. A recent revelation that struck me while revisiting the trailers and perusing the cast list is particularly noteworthy: the forthcoming DC film boasts a substantial female presence in its cast.

To put it plainly, many superhero films from the 2000s and before were predominantly male-centric. While films like X-Men offered characters such as Jean Grey, Storm, Rogue, and Mystique, movies like Spider-Man, Batman Begins, and Iron Man primarily featured a single female lead amidst a group of males. It’s important to note that this trend is not exclusive to the past, but there has been a noticeable increase in the effort to create more substantial roles for women in these narratives.

In terms of representation, the film exceeds expectations, as there are at least six significant female roles, with an additional potential one joining them.

Rachel Brosnahan + Neva Howell

Undoubtedly, a Superman film wouldn’t be complete without Lois Lane, and Rachel Brosnahan was spot-on for the part. The star of “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” even consulted with contemporary journalists to get into character as the Daily Planet reporter. If you’re like our own Mike Reyes, you really appreciated that scene with her from the Superman trailer that dropped in April.

Later on, as we’re visiting Clark Kent’s foster parents, we’ll have a chance to understand the nurturing nature of Diane Lane’s character, Martha Kent, and Pruitt Taylor Vince’s portrayal of Jonathan Kent.

Isabella Merced + Maria Gabriela De Faria

Additionally, we’ve got a few formidable women in the Superman universe, playing roles both heroic and villainous. Among them is Isabela Merced’s Hawkgirl, who teams up with Guy Gardner and Mr. Terrific as part of the Justice Gang. I can’t wait to see her in action, and she’ll be reunited with Guy in Peacemaker Season 2 starting next month.

On the opposite side stands María Gabriela de Faría’s character, Angela Spica (also known as the Engineer with nanotechnology capabilities), who is employed by Lex Luthor. It remains uncertain whether we’ll see Angela in the upcoming movie The Authority, given her comic book team affiliation, but she certainly appears to be a significant adversary, capable of holding her ground against the robots within the Fortress of Solitude, Krypton, and even Superman himself.

Sara Sampaio + Mikaela Hoover

To put it simply, we’ve got Sara Sampaio portraying Eve Teschmacher and Mikaela Hoover as Cat Grant. Eve is Lex Luthor’s assistant and girlfriend, often seen engrossed in her phone, while Cat works for The Daily Planet, though it remains unclear if she writes about gossip like her comic book version or focuses on a different topic.

Apart from these female characters making key appearances in the Superman series, there’s a buzz that Milly Alcock is set to make an appearance as Kara Zor-El, the cousin of Clark Kent/Kal-El from Krypton. However, it seems she might only have a brief part in this movie; if her character was more substantial, we would have already seen some promotional material about her. James Gunn has hinted that Superman will have an after-credits scene, so it’s likely we’ll catch a glimpse of Alcock there.

I’m happy that Superman will still have the six other ladies playing significant roles in the story, even without Kara. Beginning July 11, we’ll witness how these women are impacted by the events involving David Corenswet’s character. On June 26, 2026, Supergirl will offer a platform for DCU’s first leading cinematic superheroine to take center stage.
