Actor Anthony Carrigan, renowned for his roles in series such as “Barry” and the recent horror-comedy “Death of a Unicorn”, is set to make an appearance in this year’s reboot of the Superman franchise within the DC Universe, created by James Gunn. The trailer and audience response suggest that Gunn’s debut film in the DCU will deliver a strong revival of the iconic character. However, some viewers may connect Gunn with his past superhero work in the MCU and the “Guardians of the Galaxy” trilogy. While remaining tight-lipped about many details, Carrigan has hinted at how the new Superman will differ from its cherished predecessor in the MCU.
In a chat with The Hollywood Reporter, Carrigan discussed both Superman and his character Rex Mason/Metamorpho. Although he didn’t reveal much about the upcoming superhero film, his enthusiasm was palpable: “I haven’t seen anything more than just the trailers, but I’m really excited! Sometimes I forget that I’m involved in this movie, so whenever someone reminds me about it, I’m pleasantly surprised and think, ‘Oh, right, Superman. Yes, I am part of this film.’ It still amazes me every time.”
When asked to compare the movie with Gunn’s Marvel Cinematic Universe superhero showcase, Guardians of the Galaxy, Carrigan showed reluctance: “I wouldn’t say they are exactly alike, but both films certainly have a unique and entertaining style.
I find it difficult to compare [Superman] to the Guardians [of the Galaxy], yet I believe they share a similar heart and intelligence, which is characteristic of James. However, this project promises to be unique in its entirety. The experience of creating it was exceptional, and the entire cast was dedicated to delivering something extraordinary. Fingers crossed that this spirit translates onto the screen.
James Gunn is responsible for both writing and directing the movie titled Superman. The reboot of the DC Universe features Carrigan alongside David Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan, Nicholas Hoult, Edi Gathegi, Nathan Fillion, Isabela Merced, Wendell Pierce, Frank Grillo, and Pruitt Taylor Vince, among several others.
DCU’s ‘Superman’ Faces a Challenge (and It’s Not a Chunk of Kryptonite)
In the summer of 2025, a highly acclaimed superhero movie, known for its powerful protagonist (though opinions may vary), is struggling to claim the title of the summer’s top film. It has some stiff competition from other blockbuster releases, and while Superman remains a strong contender, audience excitement is already building. As of now, James Gunn’s key DCU project isn’t viewed as the most eagerly awaited movie of the season.
In recent surveys, blockbusters such as “Jurassic World” and “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” (DC’s rival comic book series) are currently more popular than “Superman”. This doesn’t necessarily indicate superior quality, but it does show the level of anticipation for the upcoming film. Modern audiences are increasingly cautious when it comes to rebooting cherished characters, as well as potential superhero exhaustion. James Gunn’s “Superman” could significantly influence the future direction of the DCU. Will Krypton’s iconic hero manage to create a movie that is inspiring, exciting, and genuinely good? We’ll have to wait until July 11 to find out.
At present, the movie “Death of a Unicorn” by A24 features Carrigan, Paul Rudd, Jenna Ortega, Téa Leoni, Will Poulter, and Richard E. Grant. This film is scheduled to hit theaters on March 28. So far, critics’ responses have been somewhat varied.
