Superman’s Nicholas Hoult Reveals His Reaction To Landing Lex Luthor Role After Auditioning For The Man Of Steel

As a die-hard comic book fan who has grown up with the rich tapestry of Superman lore, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgic excitement when it comes to the upcoming reboot of the Man of Steel. While Nicholas Hoult may not have landed the role of Clark Kent/Superman this time around, his transformation into Lex Luthor promises an intriguing twist that has me on the edge of my seat.

Prior to David Corenswet being chosen for the role of Clark Kent/Kal-El in James Gunn’s written and directed Superman, Nicholas Hoult was also considered for the part. Hoult, who previously portrayed Hank McCoy/Beast in the X-Men films during the “First Class” era, did not ultimately win the part of the next big-screen Superman. However, despite this, Hoult will still be a part of the upcoming DC film, taking on the role of Lex Luthor. As we approach the release date for Superman, which is just around the corner, Hoult recently revealed his reaction when he found out he was cast as Luthor after trying out for the lead superhero character.

For promoting his upcoming film “Juror No. 2”, which premiered last weekend and is set to release in 2024, actor Hoult recently visited “Happy Sad Confused” podcast where he conversed with host Josh Horowitz about his acting journey. Intriguingly, during his preparation for an audition, Hoult found himself drawn to the chrome-haired villain role of Luthor in the upcoming “Superman”, remarking that it could potentially suit him better, stating:

When I initially went through the script, a tiny voice inside me whispered, “This role seems like it could be quite enjoyable for you as Lex.

In an alternate reality, it’s possible that Nicholas Hoult was chosen to play Superman instead, and I wish the residents of that world a great viewing experience with their choice of actor in their DC Universe shared continuity. However, in our case, Hoult recognized early on that playing Lex Luthor could be intriguing in its unique way. This notion also resonated with James Gunn, which brought him delight. Hoult further added:

Initially, I didn’t utter a word. Then, when James Gunn phoned me to offer the role of Lex, I let out a chuckle, which is how I might put it. In other words, he proposed the part, and my response was a laugh because there was an intuition within me when I first read the script that suggested this character fit better in the story for me.

In December, James Gunn confirmed that Nicholas Hoult would portray Lex Luthor, and by February, a photo from the Superman cast showed Hoult’s shaved head. By July, Hoult finished filming Superman, and recently he shared that his older son shaved his head before principal photography began. Details about this iteration of Luthor are still unknown, but Hoult has mentioned that his performance will be influenced by Michael Rosenbaum’s Lex Luthor from Smallville and the portrayal of the villain in All-Star Superman. This latter character inspired Hoult to work out for the role.

In addition to Superman, other cast members in this movie include Rachel Brosnahan, Skyler Gisondo, Wendell Pierce, Nathan Fillion, Isabela Merced, Eli Gathegi, Anthony Carrigan, María Gabriela de Faría, and Sara Sampaio, among others. Although the series Creature Commandos will mark the formal start of the DC Universe next month for Max subscribers, James Gunn and Peter Safran, who jointly oversee DC Studios, view Superman as the “true commencement” of the franchise. The reboot is set to hit theaters on July 11, 2025.
